I've also recently started using google trends. You can minimize the search so it is relevant to your area of work, you can see what is popular and focus your site around that. Find what people want to know about and try provide them with that information!

I agree there is no need to keep spewing out lots of backlinks. You only need good necessary links to create a good PR. Be consistent, if you are using links through forums and blogging then make sure you check up and respond to messages and interact. A good way to ensure a good PR is by making sure your website is relevant, check all the information on it, is it current? Keep updating it with information and images, using good quality keywords. Google adwords is a great way to find out what people are looking for when searching the internet and you can go from there!

I've found that being able to take a small 5 minute break at some point in the day for people within the workplace to chat and relax, with the bosses included has really helped create a more relaxed atmosphere and thus creates happier employees, small but efficient.

I too use Hootsuite which I find to be a really efficient way to get my tweets out. It means I can schedule everything I need to say early on in the morning and get on with my business, if that was to close then I'd have more issues!
