It's important to get as many high quality links as you can, whilst targeting the same keywords throughout, like in my sig. any site with Pr3 - Pr5 (Page Rank) is considered a good site to link from

This forum is actually just a great place to be, people are great here

Anything I missed, do correct me people

Key to getting links is content. Write good content, or have something that is of genuine interest, then people will link to you.

Otherwise it's the usual sources, directories, articles, blogs, forums etc etc.

I have managed to get quite a few links in a few months and have made really good progress on Yahoo, on page one now on all there main search key words, slower on Google, basically I looked at all the competitors and there links through Alexa, also Yahoo and Google searches. Type : links after the competitors website names. I did make a mistake on the first ones by typing my company name Phoenix Helicopter Academy as a heading for my links rather than a title though,, when you do a link take your time to put in a good description and not the same one for each link, also a title you think people may type in the searches , in my case I used helicopter training school etc,

Thank you for all your opinions! Really helpful! But I'm just wondering, like when I do URL submissions, which would be more advisable, the paid links or the free ones? are free links less effective or is it just a myth? Thanks!

If you down load the alexa tool bar, it will give you an idea of the ranking of the site you are thinking of linking, I would say the free web submission software is a waist of time. You need really to see how the site itself is valuable to your business. If say it

Just a little word of advice ( well 2 actually )
1 - build your links slowly and use a variety of methods
2- don't use submission software ( more likely to harm than do you any good)

Use link exchange, directory submission, social bookmarking, article submisison etc off-page techniques for building links

You have to optimize your website with on page activities first, after you have to do link building services like Article Submissions, Directory Submissions, Social Bookmarking Submissions and Forum Posting etc. Also you can promote your website in Social Networking Sites, it would be beneficial for you.

I just came across this post and had to mention a few things that I thought were important to consider.

1. Personally I manage a lot of sites and I do beleive that using softwares is good to use, but you have to use in moderation, you can not just kill it from one type of software and just blow it up. You have to go slow and try to build it somewhat naturally looking.

And using a variety of methods is 100% correct. In my opinion if you only use one type say directory building, (using free or paid, or even using submission software) if G makes a big change then your site can be heavily impacted. You want to do blog posts, blog comments, article directory submissions, web 2.0, social bookmarking, profile building etc. you can do a search for best paid directories on G and get some good ones there that have low cost and will build many links back to your site.
