“Just a thought, there are so many younger people out of work, they receive some money whilst unemployed. Perhaps a better scheme to get them to work would be to subsidize their employment in small businesses. I know, they could be exploited as cheap labour and so on but that just means that it should be overseen..” superb idea! Putting some in a structured workplace environment may actually be the kick start they need. A grant to offset the obvious man management burden for the small biz owner, and everyones a winner. As long as they don't start reproducing and you end up with maternity and paternity red tape ![]()

As long as they don't start reproducing and you end up with maternity and paternity red tape ![]() Mmm thats true, actually I only mentioned it because it would work for my business right now, we have an opening but only half way there if you know what I mean. With a scheme in place I could jump in and employ someone. garlex
“we have an opening but only half way there if you know what I mean. With a scheme in place I could jump in and employ someone.” We're in a similar place. We think we will need potentially 3 peeps for a new project, and having been trialling temps to see if its viable. Work is pretty basic, so no formal qualifications needed, but using lower skilled youngsters leads to its own management probs, attitude, work ethic... We also found the core hours of productivity tend to be between 10.00 and 15.00, so now thinking along the lines of back to work mums, and the hours make it childcare friendly, or older people, where you get common sense and wisdom thrown in! But I would take on youngsters if there was a scheme in place.
Back to work Mums is an excellent idea, young people do not like hard work these days. Mark Pitts

If I find anything interesting I'll post back. garlex
It may have some use but it is still a bit of a gimmick. A proper look at all the rules and regs and how they apply disproportionately to small business and then get rid of as many as possible would help more. I think one of the hardest/most difficult issues is maternity/pregancy. I am not sure how this can be easily unravelled to allow small business to avoid all the bad ramifications but it is such a big problem. Bill Ryan

Bear in mind that a lengthy track record will begin to provide evidence... It may be more difficult in some jobs (e.g. factory process workers) who only need to do a limited repetetive function and do not need to interact with others as the selection criteria are so much narrower than when social/communication skills are necessary.
