Hi Guys & Gals,

Thought I'd make this post because its been on my mind for a while.

How does Blockbuster Video rental still exist.

They didn't adapt quickly enough to appearance of online streaming and rental services that have much lower overheads than traditional brick and mortar stores.

My questions for everyone are:

1. How many people still travel to a video rental shop to rent DVD's ?

2. Who has tried the online rental video streaming route before, what did you think of the service (Price, speed, quality, service)

3. How long do you think stores like Blockbuster can exist.

Let the opinions run forth

Depends, do you mean Blockbuster US, or Blockbuster UK or elsewhere?

US went bust along with Canada, although a buyer was found which kept open a few stores apparently.

If I rem rightly, (and no doubt google will soon tell you) the UK chain either bought out its master franchise, or did a deal and became a separate business from the US.

Personally I think it's a dated dying model, a shame but in reality it's been years since I last went into my local BB (if its even still there?) Suspect a lot of people are the same.

I think it's only a matter of time before it's reborn online only, as a streaming and online service, as it still has a powerful brand. Guess time will tell.

Blockbuster UK, had no idea that Canadian and American blockbuster had disappeared already. I definitely expect the UK to follow suite, cant really say it was a shame either. I remember Blockbuster as one big hassle, hassle getting there, hassle dropping the DVD back on time (Which I hardly did).

I can't see them trying to break the online market, everyone else has such a massive head start. I think the brand name itself has lost alott of its "Weight" in recent years. Good luck to them if they try !

Yep I seem to remember getting fined pretty regularly Mind you, used to be the same with library books (anyone remember them?), I'm obviously naturally lazy!

Blockbuster UK is nothing like it use to be.

I remember on a Sunday afternoon shuffling in with me brother, sister and Dad trying to secure the latest release (Ghostbusters, Gremlins or something)

It has evolved in time, going in now you can buy and rent all games for all consoles, buy the consoles and accessories and buy or rent dvd, blue ray and the like. Buy food, drink, posters everything.. Cyber Geek Heaven!

Long Live Blockbuster -

Your right though it's probably not far from the top of the hit list - Our local blockbuster is always a hive of activity though so finger crossed.

Last blockbuster purchase - Multi-terminal in car 3dsi charger about a month ago.

Could of gone to Tesco but decided to be a rebel!

Interesting, with the problems with the Game Group, maybe this has been a blessing in disguise for BB?

Well in answer to your question from April 2012, it looks like they limped along until Jan 2013

Such a shame, looking at my earlier comments

So time ran out. With a forward looking management team, using their established and recognisable brand, they could have dominated the online and film on demand space instead of sticking to their traditional bricks and mortar rental model.

Sadly that's a 2013 prediction that has already come true (although fairly obvious)
Predictions For 2013

Maybe the final death dive of the UK arm of Blockbuster? No idea how it is still trading and competing with the likes of netflix etc...
