i am thinking of selling my business, or at least my business name.
i have a need to raise money but i want to keep trading as i am now, but in a different name.
I had a company in china ask about some domain names i no longer wanted, which were the same as my business name. I was wondering if they wanted to buy the company name but cant find who they are.
Question is how much is a Ltd company name worth?
I know the company that was looking at the domains did not carry out the same work as me so from that score the name of It Has 2 Be Done Ltd could trade as anything.
Any ideas how i go about a valuation on a name only, plus phone numbers website and all domain names, and obviously any work generated from the name. But no other assets as they are not owned by the business. I wish to streamline my business into a more specialised area of my work
Your thoughts would be helpful

Are you sure these were above board? I normally get emailed every few months telling me people are about to buy mylocalservices.xyz and I need to secure them quickly. Normally originates from China and it's just a scam.

Blimey, interesting question. As pure speculation, unless someone desperately wants that name (in which case they would be talking to you) I'd suspect not that much

Maybe the Domain Names would be worth something? But the Ltd company could be called anything then you are simply "trading as", and make the trading name a catchy title.

The thing with domain names, you see some that go for thousands, and think "I've got better ones than that", but when it comes to selling on the likes of flippa.com you end up with nothing other than listing fees I've tried selling a few domains mylocaltaxi.com microtrader.co.uk wheelbrace.com, and not had a sniff...

There are plenty of business selling type sites, but if you want a response, you will end up having to take out a premium type listing, which will rack up monthly charges. As you are not selling a complete business, just a name and domains, is it worth it?

If you think the proposition is genuinely worth X and you have a budget of Y which you are willing to spend in order to achieve X, then go for it

It seems a shame though if you have an established business, and you have spent so long advertising and marketing it under It Has 2 be done. Starting with a new name seems a lot of potential pain?

Cheers Steve
I agree it can be a pain to start again, but we already have other businesses in place and so it will only be a case of promoting them more, as we are already established on google etc.
i know the company in China approached me and i would not think for one minute that they would pay for the Ltd name.
I have a business in the north of Derbyshire that wants to trade with me and so i may well see if they want to buy us out.
I doubt it will go anywhere but one never knows till it is tried.

Hi,

Yes it is possible to sell your company's name. I would advise that you set up a new business/company first and transfer everything youy want to keep to that new format. Then you can talk to Companies House or one of the brokers who sell companies off the shelf. If you google 'companies off the shelf' or 'company set up broker' you should find dozens of them and they might give you an idea of the value of what you are offering.

The main thing to be aware of is that it is only worth what someone will pay for it.

The other thing to consider is that your current name might have a great deal of kudos and respect, if you sell your name you might be selling that with it and have to regrow it for yourself all over again.

If you would like more information, please email me: nathan@sandau.biz

What is the name of the company you are selling, or hoping to?

Any idea what you want for it?

You seem to have a very good business premise!

Could you not sell the business name with some training etc and sell it as a franchise?

This would increase it's value as you have added value to the names and websites etc...

Believe it or not, it might be worth trying an auction of the business, whether you try ebay or some of the other more specialised business websites, it really depends on what you want to do.

If you sold it as a franchise you would retain some of your hard earned name, and receive some income from it. Best of both worlds in my mind. Franchises are worth more than just names too! (Usually).
