Anyone got experience of starting a SIPP. Have been reading about it on a website but not sure if it right for me

Go on then ... tell us (or just me?) what a SIPP pension actually is.

I know what it is, but don't have one. 'fraid I'm a pension cynic... bricks and mortar is my plan, failing that, will sponge off the kids

The Pensions Advisory Service
A Self Invested Personal Pension (SIPP) is a type of personal pension plan. It works in the same way for contributions, tax relief and eligibility. However the main difference is that the SIPP has a more flexible approach to investments.

...A SIPP allows the plan holder much greater freedom in what to invest in and for the plan to hold these investments directly. The plan holder can have control over the investment strategy or can appoint a fund manager or stockbroker to manage the investments.

Anyone have any SIPP experience?

I think that over the years so much damage has been done to the reputation of pensions, by Government, businesses and investment company's that people tend to run a mile from them. Unless you work for a local authority / Government agency where your pension is paid for by the council tax payers, the chances of you having so much disposable income to invest now for the future are pretty slim and the older you get the more disposable income you need. As they are now moving the goal posts as to when people can retire the idea of investing for a pension to me is off putting. I think I'm, with a lot of people and into bricks and mortar, can always downsize or even move up north if need be. The other thing to consider is, is if your business is doing well, let someone else run it and take a regular income from it.

Thanks,
Barney
