I love this story.
The Archbishop of Canterbury has warned the online lender Wonga that the Church of England plans to force it out of business - by competing against it.

The Most Rev Justin Welby told Wonga boss Errol Damelin the Church planned to do this by expanding credit unions as an alternative to payday lenders...

..."I said to him quite bluntly that 'we're not in the business of trying to legislate you out of existence; we're trying to compete you out of existence'."

He said of Mr Damelin's response: "He's a businessman; he took that well."

Fantastic, way to go Rev Welby!

Now this is something the Church really could do to up it's profile and make it's mark as a focal point for the local community. A trusted and ethical credit union.

I've just emailed Rev Welby and asked him if the C of E would consider starting a search engine....

Oh dear seems that the Church has indirectly funded Wonga just 24 hours after announcing plans to go head to head with them as per the above!

According to reports it appears that around

Oddly enough, Wonga is here as well. We have ads on radio and TV all the time.

Thanks,

Personally I think the Church should stick to what they do best !

... which should include trying to persuade all of us to act ethically and to be honest about our mistakes

Well religion and money seem to go hand in hand, I have yet to see a poor church........

Thanks,
Barney

With all the publicity positive and negative, that Wonga is generating, this article has an interesting take of conflicting publicity and brand damage.

There is such a thing as bad publicity

I think the Charity Commissioners set tight constraints on faith groups' accounts, just as they do with other charities.

Churches, synagogues, mosques etc have to use at least a (high) set percentage of their income and resources (capital, buildings and so on) to serve whatever purposes they were set up for. They'd be in trouble if they stuck too much of their income and capital in the bank.
