Phones 4U goes into administration - 550 stores close

This is a really odd story, Phones 4U goes into administration putting at 5,596 jobs at risk, but it appeared to be a sound business, generating £1 billion in revenue and over £100 million in profit.

But for some reason EE and Vodaphone decided not to renew contracts, overnight depriving Phones 4U of a business model, as they are basically middlemen sales agents, selling phone contracts.

If the business was that profitable, and presumably generating plenty of customers and revenue for the big phone providers, then why did they pull the plug?

It seems to be about the big players wanting to sell to customers direct and cutting out the middleman, but I suspect we may hear more about the behind the scenes activity in the near future.

Just goes to show, even £1 billion businesses can have an Achilles heel in their business model!

In my end of the Shopping Centre there is O2, EE, Phones4u, Vodafone and 3store almost lined-up next door to each other, with Carphone Warehouse down the other side. Yesterday i saw 3 Phones4u staff working in 3 of the above stores literally 2 days after being behind the counter of Phones4u. I guess someone knew something...

Thanks,
Kempres

It is odd, the main phone networks have had High Street chains for some time, so have been selling direct, and you're right, you tend to seem them clustered together. So it's not hard for a consumer to wonder in and out and shop around for the best deal, rather than go via a middleman like Phones 4U.

I suppose though they act like a broker to find you the best deal to save you wondering in & out of the main 4.

What would you rather do, spend an hour being hard sold by each of the main 4 or go in to Phones4u and have 1 salesman sell you the best product for your needs?

Ive actually just changed sims - walked into Carphone Warehouse, next door to Orange shop, gave them my requirements and 10 minutes later i had a deal with Orange, cheaper than going with Orange direct

Heard on the News earlier that EE are to take on around 50+ stores following on from Vodafones announcement Friday to take on 140.

Hang on a sec, didnt both of these companies decide not to renew the contracts for phones4U to carry on reselling?

I accept that jobs have been saved etc, but surely this stinks?

phones 4u in my Shopping Centre is about to be EE, next door to an existing EE which is being kept...i guess EE are doing okay then!

Presumably they will knock it through into one and make a super store?
