The end of the gasometer?

Every time I see a gas holder now I chuckle as it reminds me of when we drove through Brum on the M6 and I had to explain to the wife that the gas tank wasn't broken, but but was empty which was why you could only see the skeleton frame.

So it seems these iconic/ugly/eyesore depending on view point are set to disappear for good as the National Grid who says they are no longer needed, starts to dismantle them and make a few quid by flogging the land

According to the beeb they have been around for 200 years, didn't realise they had been around for that long!

Will the UK's gas holders be missed? - BBC News

So UK icons or good riddance to eyesores and hello to more Wimpey houses?

I am amazed one of these hasn't blown up.

Hopefully one will be reassembled in a museum... ;-)

Did like the shooting fish film if you've ever seen it. Great brit film, but they also live in a gasometer which was pretty funny.

It always surprised me why the IRA never use to visit these works of art....
