Keywords in URLs - any best practices? 7th September 2011 11:01 PM
Well I never, didn't know that

We use underscores in our URL extensions, so assumed you could use them in the actual URL.

Was thinking it might be visually more appealing breaking up the keywords. Is there any actual evidence that hyphens can cause problems, or is just accepted bad practice by you SEO folk?

There is no evidence to suggest hyphens cause problems - absolutely none. My experience over the years is that they cause no problems AND (as you say) are much easier to read by humans!!!
Total myth.

Yes, it helps to get a niche quality backlink for your website

I agree - but do not spend too much time on this. You can spend weeks of your life sending emails to people who are just not interested. But, if there are like-minded people in your niche then go for it.
Twitter not for me? 6th September 2011 4:53 PM
I agree - Twitter is a complete waste of space for most businesses.
Concentrate on other aspects of the marketing mix.
Website Banners 6th September 2011 4:47 PM
sjr4x4 was absolutely right!

I would be wary of purchasing one-off banners like this unless:

1. You know the traffic visiting the site
2. The site is tightly targeted to your own marketplace.

Fair points steve.

I think non updated pages could be the next battle ground, with out of date content and old news articles choking the search results. This is where realtime search stands a chance.

Not sure I agree with that. A lot of the 'old' stuff is as relevant now as it always has. And some kid coming along and plagiarising it for his own ends adds nothing to the picture.
Then again, I have a vested interest in that many of my top ranking pages have not changed over almost 10 years !!!!!

Get free backlinks for your website 24th February 2011 12:08 PM
Hi,

I too agree with Drian and Headsocial. It is actually not at all possible to get backlinks so easily. Backlinks can be achieved through social bookmarking, networking, forum posting, classified adds, etc. I think these are considered as better ways to get free backlinks.

Anyways thanks for sharing the information with us.

Thanks

Although I would suggest Social Bookmarking is not going to produce actual backlinks - just referrals hopefully.

My advice is 'do not use it'.
Google is looking for false methods of generating links, and it is more than able to 'spot' such simple techniques. They can then easily ignore such links, or they might even punish such systems.
Forget it! If you have long-term goals for your website, then following such techniques is likely to drive your rankings DOWN.
Google Places 17th January 2011 5:02 PM
Thats excellent news, unfortunately in some geographical areas, google places is still in beta testing, which is why some searches dissapear then re-appear or look different from others and such like.

There is a particular problem that I am aware of at the moment regarding locksmith businesses on google places, many legitimate businesses including some customers of mine have had accounts under review due to some teething problems and fraudulent places accounts set up by scammers claiming to be locksmiths!
So as a temporary measure Google have disallowed the word locksmith in places accounts.

Very interesting as I have a client locksmith in exactly that position at the moment.
Fraudulent businesses claiming everyone else's Places listing! You actually KNOW that that category of business has been 'under review' or are you just speculating?
