I know Microsoft have made some mistakes over the years, but backwards compatibility isn't one of them. WOW64 (windows on windows) allows the 64bit machine to run 32bit apps. In the server world we found 64bit really useful as it could natively address memory > 4GB without using stuff like AWE (address windowing extensions).

NT wasn't bad apart from DirectX and USB support, miles better than 95, 98 or ME. I think XP was one of the best to come out of Redmond (and DOS 3.3). Not tried Windows 8 yet as quite happy with Win 7 on the laptop.

Google did an interesting sting operation on Microsoft last year:

Google claims that Microsoft
There was some good stuff on Steve Gibson's site about how he discovered Real Networks was doing something similar. They sent him a letter as I think he'd upset them quite a bit!

I had a bit of trouble getting parts for the computer that lives under the TV as the backing plates are half height and not all cards come with them so you have to check first.

How much noise does your computer make with all those fans? Do you use software that can use all those cores? I remember in the early days of NT4 & 2000, there wasn't much stuff apart from SQL server that could truly make good use of additional CPUs.

With a set up like that it sounds that you'll be able to crack AES encryption! :-)

I always get a case for mine as phones live in my pockets and keys and coins scratch them.

We found that iTunes was a bit of a pain in the corporate world as it was difficult to manage accounts for employees as they all needed their own username and pass. With BlackBerry BES you have so much more central control from a BES server.

There is software now called Good Technology which gives you the BES type functions on non-Blackberry phones such as having the ability to remote wipe and use secure email etc. I think it was written by two guys that used to work for RIM.

I've used Oracle UPK before in a large commercial environments. It was good for creating interactive tutorials and learning like Macromedia Authorware but I think it costs a small fortune.

Video guides are great to get you started and I think most prefer the human element of a real person talking and telling you what to do. I found our user guides pretty time consuming to produce with writing the text and making/adjusting the screen captures, but it's quite easy to edit and upload pics into through WordPress. I guess this is another good point for CMS Vs pure HTML website as you can get non-tech staff using WordPress for your guides with very little HTML knowledge.

I think user guides and tutorials are something you always improve on over time. Hopefully I'll get chance to try Camtasia this afternoon.

It's worth running it for a week or so with a few different campaigns ads so you can see how you're getting on and what people are clicking on. If you can get hold of a voucher, it's always good to start you off.

After a week or so you can also make some decisions about display network (ad on other web sites) Vs search network.

I agree it's always worth setting a limit so you know where you are with it.

In our first week we found that most of the traffic came from referals which I found quite suprising. Also you can add campaign parameters to your URLs so you can be pretty certain where the visit came from.

Our marketing chap is managing ours for the time being so I'm interested to learn from him so I know what everything means in that big control panel!

They are large but I've found that you need to run them through editing software first anyway (like Windows Movie Maker). It's difficult to do a tutorial for 10 minutes and not make a mistake. I'm sure even Speilberg hasn't done a one-cut movie.

Movie maker just exports them to WMV and then I just upload the file into Youtube. I know the output WMV is usually a few hundred MB but it seems to upload ok into Youtube. These are yesterday's first attempts here.

I did try writing a script, but it ends up being thousands of words and I found it was easier just to practise at getting it right and chop it back together with your favorite editor.

I'll try those capture programs that you recommend. :-)

I've never quite understood why there are so many mobile apps - Apple has over 650K. I think there are needs for specific business apps to give access to line of business applications.

My friend showed me a new app yesterday whereby you could book a taxi. I mean what could be more efficient than ringing the taxi office and saying that you want a taxi? The call would only last about 20 seconds; It would take longer than that to find the app in your menu!

I've got a 7 channel amp connected via optical to the home theatre PC. The wife doesn't like the speakers because they take up so much space. I put the wires in the walls when we decorated to meet her halfway. I can't watch a Hollywood Blockbuster on the silly little speakers in the back of the telly!

I used to like getting reviews of all the components, particularly the motherboard. Nowadays I just use a built laptop, just a shame it came with a load of pre-installed rubbish on it.

They must have set a brief to see how much junk they could install on one hard disk!
