you want it set to cam. which is constantly awake mode = no power saving.
If you have no transit power then it is cranked up to the max.

I don't suppose you have the same lappy's then you could do a HD swap and rule out your software config.

We do have exactly the same laptops but switching HD's sounds a bit (well actually a lot!) beyond me....

Nah, it's like lego, except even easier, because there's only one way it'll fit. Even I've done it. Although the screws are a bit on the small side, so make sure the 3-year-old is out of the way first.

Mary is spot on it is very easy
switch the lappy off
undo the screw pulled the HD out and plug in the other one and your done.

If it's a new laptop -- chances are it's supported under an alternative Operating System. If you could get an Ubuntu Live CD and boot from there, you can check if your hardware is working fine.

This live CD will open a new operating system which won't touch your current system (unless you press install). Then you can try to connect to your wireless or wired -- and see your internet connection. If it's a mainstream laptop computer, everything will be installed and setup (the ones the you're going to use) by the LIVE CD and ready for you to use.
