And 'graphic design coalville' (map thingy!) I was up on the 'Web Design Coalville' too, but not now, so hammering the SEO side at the minute to get back up, seems I had left out the site map when the new site went live, D'oh, room 101 stuff!

Small tip from daft SEO company that called the other day, remove html errors via a validation site and include a .html sitemap aswell, within a few hours of putting a .html sitemap up google had indexed a further 5 pages! Crucial!

Yahoo Directory = SCAM

Thanks,

Yahoo Directory = SCAM

Care to elaborate? Personal experience or anecdotal?

Whatever you think about Yahoo, it is still a major player in the search engine world, and yahoo is one of the top 5 visited sites on the planet, and as it is manually entered, that means that yahoo have given you a much sought after credibility ranking.

Credibility is crucial

Of course it is still crucial but you can get links on there site without paying

For one thing I have to say is that search engine crawlers/spiders make me stir crazy. It seems to me it's like rolling the dice. I have heard advice on everything including back links, blogs, directories, articles, press releases I've did all those and it hasn't did me a bit of good. My site looks good and I'm still a starving developer like millions of others. I understand there are a gazillion web designers out there how do the bazillion make it. I also realize it takes money to make money isn't that like a catch 22? I guess I'm not doing very good at this forum thing. I haven't really gave out any friendly advice. So here is my advice which I should listen to myself. Be patient and be consistent.

SBronson, this may seem a tad harsh, but you need to man up, you need to find what works for you, and stop being so negative, as that will never attract any clients, self pity (I guess I'm not doing very good at this forum thing. I haven't really gave out any friendly advice) is seriously infectious so people will stay clear of you.

Just relax, take your time to get to know the members and people on the forum, I can name a few of the people on here as friends now, and that is only through being myself and appreciating them for being their selves, even Stavros

A forum is not a job board but a place for people to come together and help each other, if you do not have the advice to give, then ask for some, everybody needs help, those that say they do not are only lying to themselves.

Lets get to know the real SBronson, tell us about yourself, your work, your hobbes etc, the rest will follow.

Of course it is still crucial but you can get links on there site without paying

Yup, you certainly can, but the argument which gets debated back and forth is that the Yahoo directory is used as a reference point by Google. This ius different to their normal index.

Simplified, spammers and scammers wont pay for a listing, and the directory is human edited, so becomes a trusted resource, as paying a fee doesn't guarentee a listing! (now thats what I call marketing!)

Theres no disputing this was the case, in the same way as Google used the DMOZ.

Question is, is this still the case? Thats when you have to make your own mind up. For the My Local websites, we've seen a postive return from listing, but I analyse it year on year. The concensus seems to be from differnet SEO forums, that the Yahoo directory is playing a much less important role.

I'm very new to this but I assumed this was free, are others like this am I only going to be listed on Google?

Mama C's Brownies all the major search engines are free and in time you will list on all of them, however the yahoo directory is like going into any form of advertising where you pay a fee and hope that it brings you enough revenue and more to pay for the cost of the advert.
