Hi Mama C, welcome aboard.

It does cause a bit of confusion, you can happily list for free on all the major search engines, including Yahoo. But Yahoo also have a separate service called the Yahoo Directory, and this is a paid service.

For the time being, I wouldn't worry about it, and stick to the freebies.

May SEO experts advsie that a yahoo directory inclusion is quite important for SEO but it is expesnive. Best of the Web BOTW is well regarded but I think costs about the same and then theres good old DMOZ. I did once see a supposedly objective study to see if inclusion in the yahoo directory gave a measurable positive outcome and I think the result was that it didn't.

This is an old thread, and the UK Yahoo Directory closed down on 18/11/10

Here's the blurb from Yahoo themselves:

The Yahoo! UK & Ireland Directory will be shutting down on 18th of November 2010.

What will happen to my Directory Submit listing?

You have two options if you currently have an open order for a site listed under the Regional/Countries/United Kingdom category path of the Yahoo! Directory:
You may continue to maintain your listing through the US based Directory Submit program. Your site will remain listed in the Directory as it is now, and the applicable annual fee will apply on your anniversary date. No further action on your behalf would be required.
