Forgive me if the threads in the wrong cat, was not sure where to place it.

It's my first real new post in a while .... but this question has been bugging me for a long time now. I am, by nature, a designer and an artist, but have recently (since dec 2010 / jan 2011) been placed in my Internet Marketing Position, which I love, don't get me wrong, but it has me at an ethical crossroads atm.

The reason I say that is I am a proud white hat marketer, nothing BH has ever crossed my PC or laptop, and If i have the common sense, never will. What bothers me is that there are so many things on the net that people talk about on a daily basis that make no sense to me and I automatically label it as black hat. People talk about scrapers, blasting links and you name it and I feel like a nun looking at a child that said a cuss word. (literally, lol and I am petrified of nuns )

So let me ask you this question about ethics. Using software to help you build links, using bought proxies, scrapers to build a list for blog commenting etc. Would you ever consider doing this or using these tools? and why?

Maybe I am just completely wack, but I believe that things that stop the natural growth of back links are ethically questionable. Or maybe its my designer mentality stopping me from seeing the big picture?

Thanks,
Dreamraven

I suppose I always look at it through the eyes as an SEO self taught amateur. Once you have the basics mastered, it's just a case of staying on top of everything and ensuring everything I do is by the book.

But I've come a cropper in the past, by doing something questionable, and having it pointed out by professionals. Rookie mistakes, that kind of thing.

So when people mention scrapers, automated submissions, spinning content, I just think no thanks, and always associate those activities (rightly or wrongly) to grey or black hat practices.

But then I don't do it for a living, or at least for paying clients. So I suppose for SEO professionals, business necessity will dictate there has to be an element of automation and tools, as being completely manual like me isn't very cost effective

Whether some of those tools are classed as naughty I suppose depends on the tools

For me personally, my new bible is SEOmoz, and I'm finding it extremely useful, and keeps me on the straight and narrow.

SEO seems to have a bad reputation along with sales people! But there are plenty of professionals out there who take pride in their work.

I have bookmarked it, thank you. Sticking to my principles is something I have always done, but when I think about what can be done for the company I work with..... I don't know. I just cannot believe that people would openly talk about things like that, knowing full well that the Big G can see it all. Maybe it's the adrenaline rush... it completely escapes me.

sjr4x4 I am by no means professional, being in the field for so little a time, but I have done well doing what I have done so far. Because of that, I will stick to it and make sure that I stay on the straight and narrow. It just makes me wonder though, would a person really go that far to make money? by any means necessary?

Unfortunately yes...

Way of the world unfortunately, everyone wants a quick fix to easy money, and there are too many inexperienced or naive people out there, that will fall prey to the unscrupulous

"can you guarantee me top of page 1..." Oh yes, just hand over your credit card

Kinda makes me think of when I was at our blog this morning. Someone actually made a comment that was caught by akismet that said they could guarantee over 10 000 links to my site for some stupid price. After picking my jaw up off the floor, I thanked akismet for blocking it and deleted the comment permanently.

I am seriously NOT interested in someone doing my work for me and most definitely not interested in doing said work in such a way that it involves shady goings on. I am one of those old schoolies that believe a company's reputation is still important, and won't do anything to compromise that.

I guess it takes all sorts....

This is like a whole new area of "wrong" though. I can understand the money factor, but why on earth would you stake your reputation, the rep of everyone that is helping you, just to sell newspapers etc. I seriously don't get it...
