It is well known that in order to keep your webpage high in the search results the keyword has to be supported by a rich content, especially text on that page.

However, I have noticed many professional websites only put a couple of sentences in a box and add the "read more >>" button which either takes the reader to a different page where the full story is or expands the box on the same page.

The question is how does this work exactly in terms of SEO?
Is the expandable text beneficial for supporting the keyword although it is either hidden or located on a different page.
Is it readable by the SEs ?

I think homepages with such a design look really neat and nice.
But SEO is probably more important

If it expands in the same page, then yes they help SEO for that page as SE read all contents(as you see in source code) no matter if they are hidden with CSS or JS. But if they open in another page, the page with read more >> button won't get any benefit from it. As long as the info is beneficial for viewers but hidden to keep the design clean, no problem at all. But if the info there make no sense to viewers and are there just for the bots, then its kind of black/grey hat.
