Fake online reviews

The popular press has recently highlighted a practice which some well-informed surfers had already suspected... Reviews we find online, on websites devoted to travel, hotels or restaurants, are sometimes published by fake customers receiving payment for making them. MSN Web IT News

We know, search engines are always trying to stop spamming, they have much succeeded but spamming is still around us.

Do think they can stop such things?

It's an interesting one. We recently rebuilt our review system, because to be honest it was rubbish We didn't allow negative feedback because when we did it was abused, and the positive was obvious self promo stuff.

So I spent a long time looking at other review sites, trying to find all the best ones, and went to speak to the guy that took on Trip Adviser and forced them to readdress their review system.

As a result, I think we made ours on My Local Services as fair as humanely possible, but the quality of review sites out there is amazing, and I say the majority we looked at were floored, with blatant unmoderated self promo, or legally worrying slander and abuse.

Paying someone to do fake reviews is no great surprise, but I suspect these will be pretty simple to spot, and no doubt a lot will be poor English

How you get a search engine to filter against bad reviews though is going to be a tough one, as Google is actively encouraging review based content as we move into a brave new social search world.

No don't think they can completely stop these things. Think if you've looked at online reviews and use a number of site long enough that you become pretty capable of spotting fake glowing reviews.

I actually enjoy doing reviews, especially design reviews. You get good and bad reviews, it depends on the person asking for the review and the person giving it I guess.

You would be amazed. Everytime there is a new algo, someone's already working on a way around it. I really don't think its going to end anytime soon. People are just going to get a lot more "creative".

I don't think it can be stopped completely, it is very hard to moderate. Thankfully, if a company only has a load of 5* reviews and they are all full of praise then I might be a little suspicious. Having a look around various review sites to get a general overview rather than just on site usually helps too.

Definitely a approach that people should take.
