Interesting one, didn't even know Tesco was in Japan, but apparently after trying for nearly 10 years, they can't make any money, so are pulling out.
Very bizarre deal though, to pull out, they first need to invest
That's really interesting. I didn't know either. One thing I am not clued up on is why they have to invest in another venture so that they can move out of Japan. Thanks, Dreamraven
I wish I could say this story is a shame, I shop in Tesco over here, generally out of the lack of other options. Despite the convenience of these megastores, the unfortunate side effect of them moving into a new territory is to destroy the small shops in the local area. My one pet hate is the fact that small local butchers are on the decrease, it would be nice to go into a local butcher and get a personal service and buy locally reared meat. Richardwell25

We have one local spar out here and truthfully, I don't like the quality of the meat sold at it. There always seems to be one or two new butcheries popping up out here, but the never last long because they don't get the support they need because of the Spar. Which more than sucks, because their meat quality is higher by far. Thanks, Dreamraven
I read this article too - i would think that Japan is least of Tesco's worried though! enterprisepe
The demise of many local shops is unfortunate but there are still local butchers, bakers and (maybe candlestick makers). They have survived because they have adapted and actually marketed their business. Too many high street butchers set up shop and expected the customers to keep coming. Supermarkets started decades ago so they have no excuse for going out of business. Meat is meat!! If you want to pay for quality go to Fortnum and Mason or another top of the range shop ![]() andrewtomkinson

Supermarkets around here are famous for saying they buy everything in bulk so that we save, but truth be told we lose out a lot in terms of quality. ![]() ![]() ![]() Thanks, Dreamraven |
