Blimey, this would be an interesting one:

Eric Schmidt Floats Idea Of A Yahoo-Google Search Partnership

Would that signal the death of Bing and any potential (not there was any) Google competiton...

You mean there isn't any currently, or there still wouldn't be any if they merged

Well there isn't much currently as it stands but this would probably push it over the edge and cause a stink to the remaining search engines.

My limited understanding of competition regulators is that they look to barriers to entry, rather than specifically market share. A few years ago I was involved in setting up a business to take on a UK near-monopoly. As it happened just after we started business our overseas parent companies merged

It would have been good generally for their to have been a competitor in that particular market (nothing to do with search engines), the argument was there was no barrier to entry as we had set the business up for something less than

Good points AlanF. I think my point was that Google has such a big market share already that it dominates the search traffic as it stands. If Yahoo and Google were to hash out a deal that would be considered highly unfair to the other search engine companies.

On a slightly different point I think that Yahoo should of taken Bing takeover offer. Lets hope that Yahoo can term its fortunes around.

You'll get your competition, in the next generation of search engines, which Googles already starting on, I think you'll see the Facebook entry...

Well I've mentioned it a few times over the years, and always thought a Facebook Search Engine was the next logical step. It looks like I'm not alone:

Facebook is essentially a search engine for individuals and business pages anyway so I can easily see this hapening

I know Facebook is working on it but not sure if it will be successful or any good but anything can happen.

All you need is a bit of traffic and popularity.

There was a time when everyone loved Google, as it was a breath of fresh air from the old portal engines like Altavista. Maybe it's time for a change again.
