A familiar name on the UK highstreet went into administration yesterday, but has struggled for a long time.

BBC News - Comet retailer to go into administration

Interesting reading the article on the beeb, that Comet was bought for a token

We all have to accept our part in this further tragic loss to the High Street.

How many of us have gone in to the likes of Comet to "touch" a product only to end up buying it cheaper on-line?

Such a sad day yet again not just for the people losing their jobs but another High Street brand potentially is about to be closed & become a distant memory.

That's a fair point, but how do you counter that?

The only major UK high street player now is Curry's. So if you want to easily touchy feely a washing machine, cooker or widescreen TV, you go to Currys. But do you then google it to get the best price elsewhere?

If that's the case, then surely it's only a matter of time before Currys goes pop? Or can Currys compete with the online retailers better than what Comet did?

I'm not sure they can? Then what happens? Everything is bought online? Or maybe a return to specialised bricks and mortar shops rather superstores?

Wonder how long Currys will last or how they will address this issue?

On the positive side, there will be a closing down sale shortly...

Thanks,

Will there though? I heard that the reason they are in trouble is that suppliers were asking for payment in advance for stock

My parents had a bad experience with comet, they never fixed our washing machine we had to hire somebody out because, their service is really bad. with that out of the way why did a major retailer sell out for only 2 pound, can someone explain it to me pls.

The problem with stores like Comets is, is that once you've entered the store the chances are that by the time you've reached the other end of the store you've been pounced on by half a dozen sales staff, whos sole mission in life is to get you to take out an extended worthless warranty. The days of getting electrical goods repaired have long gone, it's a throw away lifestyle now. People want to keep up with the 'Jones' if the neighbour has a gadget then you want one better. I don't think I've seen a television repair man for over 20 odd years, yet as a kid every 6 months or so the television repair chap would visit and replace a valve or something... No PCB's then

Thanks,
Barney

Unfortunately it's a common tactic these days to try and save a failing business. A token sale of
