After 12 years, Microsoft is ending support for Windows XP, and no more patches or security fixes will be available after the 8th April 2014.
So if you have been soldering on with your beloved Windows XP, it's time to make a decision and run without patches, and possible lose out on other vendor support such as antivirus, or upgrade to a new operating system.
The reality is though, if your old PC or laptop has been running fine with XP and is a few years old, the chances are it's going to struggle, if run at all with a more modern operating system. (unless you fancy moving to Unix/Linux).
Microsoft is obviously keen to move people to it's latest and greatest operating system, Windows 8.1.
Me personally, as a great fan of XP, I'm quite happy with Windows 7 on my 2 year old laptop, and it is 100% better than the bodged effort of Windows Vista. We've also got Windows 8 running in the office, I'm not a fan, but it seems stable. The new menu design was a cause for constant irritation, so we downloaded a shell to make it look like Windows 7
Here's the official blurb from Microsoft:
Support is ending for Windows XP - Microsoft Windows
I am with you on the Windows 8 thing. My wife has that running on her PC and any time I have to use it's like I am picking up a computer for the first time, menu screens shifting all over the place. Very frustrating. I am happy to stick to OS X. SB1 Design Affordable Web Design & SEO from
I think 8.1 is a great system for touch screen, but it is WAY too spread out to use with a mouse or trackpad. My brother has his set up to easily switch between the larger icons to a 7-esque set up depending on how he is using it (trackpad or touch screen) and it works really well. I on the other hand have a normal laptop, and I use 7, I think my last XP was 2, maybe 3 computers ago. Thanks, RainbowBakehouse
thing is, we have an old hp here, a fairly limp dual core, with a tiny addon graphics card. runs windows 8.1 fantastically. my computer at home, about 6 years old, most likely outpaces some of the faster modern machines (it was high spec at the time though). this cmputer however, had nothing but issues on xp. it was slow, crashed, driver issues etc. windows 7 was extremely good to me. it was faster than xp, looked better and had a lot more features. in short, dont assume that because your computer is a bit old that it wont run 7 or 8. download an evaluation copy to try and see how it runs. on the other hand, if your computer isnt fast enough to run windows 7 or 8 comfortably, then it is most likely a dire pig with xp as well. something like a single core athlon will be diabolically slow with anything short of a VERY light linux distro. xp is thirteen years old, its time to let it go. Thanks, CD2 Solutions
Interesting to see the banks have been negotiating extended support contracts as they seem to have lot of legacy XP machines still in active service, not including cashpoint machines, that run a special version of XP (which remains in support until 2016). Great quote from the inquirer. “Windows 8 does not appear to be part of the roadmap for any of the UK banks, which means that by the time Windows 7 upgrades are completed, it will be less than three years until that, too, reaches end of life and the cycle begins again, though by that time it's expected that many more of us will be using digital wallets in any case. Banks negotiate extended Windows XP support for ATM systems- The Inquirer” Seems a false economy to be upgrading to Windows 7, but I remember from my techie days these huge deployments took years to manage and roll out. Looks like little has changed in recent years ![]()
Is there a certain generalised lack of enthusiasm for Windows 8? Some 2 years after I first got it, I now like Windows 7 as much as Windows XP! Linda CareersPartnershipUK
Today's the day, XP Doomsday!! So they reckon 25% of the worlds PC's are still running Windows XP, and security fixes, patches and supports now officially ends. Any members still running XP? If so are you planning to upgrade or soldier on? |
