Yahoo/Yelp Review Chaos

Yahoo and Yelp recently partnered allowing Yelp reviews to be shown on Yahoo Local Business Listings.

Sounds fair enough. But it seems they made a bit of a pigs ear of the implementation and instead off allowing for previously generated Yahoo reviews, and combining them with Yelp ones, businesses have simply lost any previous Yahoo reviews. Something that will also happen on Bing, as Yahoo and Bing have a content partnership deal.

Local Businesses Losing Reviews After Yelp-Yahoo Deal - Search Engine Land

"We partnered with Yelp, one of the most trusted, relevant sources of consumer business reviews, to provide a richer search experience for Yahoo users. That’s why when Yelp’s reviews are available for U.S. businesses, they will replace Yahoo Local reviews."

So if you had 25 reviews on Yahoo, and then get 1 on Yelp, you lose the previous 25

Be interesting to see if this is rolled out to the UK, as Yelp has a much less dominant position than it does in the UK. But it does seem a very odd way of doing things, and with access to all that technical resource, they certainly could have done it better IMHO!

with yelp, dont you need to sign to be a member? So you cant just go and leave a review, you have to join the community (like Qype used to be).

Wasn't sure about this, so tested it out!

So yup, you need an account to leave a review, which is a shame, as that will deter a lot of people, but I suppose the argument for it, is if you want to leave lots of reviews and be a "Yelper" then you only have to do it once.

But within 2 minutes of me joining, I have a friend...

and another just come through....

Yep.. and another.....   god I'm popular

Maybe this is what people want, but it doesn't float my boat...

So finally I've had enough of getting bombarded:

So no doubt, log in, and go to email preferences, and yup, a nice obvious stop any more emails. Sounds fair enough.

I then get the following message:

What? You mean Yelp have someone employed to select the tick box to stop sending me emails?

Come on Yext, you're supposed to be a market leader, with endless developer resources, and should be leading the way in innovation design and features. Not spamming people by default.

B- must try harder.

No it's not sour grapes or cheap competitor bashing. I think the Yext platform is very good and would encourage any small business to get signed up. While you are there, give us a review!

It's the lack of thought into some of the design flow processes of the review system that annoys me. Or maybe it's my OCD and nobody else minds
