Assume you mean business wise?

For me, running a business is a self consuming passion. Its hard work, frustrating, tedious at times, stressful, as well as rewarding. Wouldn't swop it for the world, which is what drives my motivation. I'm as motivated and passionate now as I was when I started 5 years ago.

Hopefully I'll be the same in another 5 years

I think a key thing for me is to keep focused on the core business. I have a number of potential projects smouldering away, but I know I can't give them the attention they deserve, and if I spread myself too thin, I'd hit the motivation issue as things got on top of me. Plus I dont think Clive would thank me if I started anything else right now!

The forum was a gamble, but turns out to be quite theraputic as opposed to a resource drain, and theres no real work involved, just a bit of banter

Others like Kip seem to be able to juggle multiple business ventures much better, so be interested to hear what keeps our Kip motivated

Being mentally unstable helps out a lot!

I have a very active mind, I cannot concentrate on one thing, so I do full on bursts everywhere I can, as Steve said, I am passionate about what I do, if you are not, you need to be making a LOT of money for it to be worthwhile, as a young business, you have to accept that the Aston Martin is not on order yet, but its about the bigger picture, the tomorrow, not the now!

Like Steve says, I have my hands in a few pies, and if you have the same mentality or state of mind as me it will work for you, if you do not it wont, I would like nothing more than to focus on one thing, but it is not the way my mind works.

I have started working with a PR woman, with the intent to set me up as a go to guy with the media, she is talking about some very exciting stuff, and has me all a jitter! I think that pretty much sums it up, excitement drives me!

Like Kip and Steve - although on a rather different scale - I'm keeping motivated because running a business is almost like playing a computer game, it's the fun and the challenge of playing that keeps me playing. There's a lot to learn, a great feeling of accomplishment when I manage to do something a bit new, and all sorts of interesting bonus levels to discover along the way.

Also I know that my mother is loving being able to tell people that her daughter is "running her own business" and yeah, I like that bit too - it's a lot more satisfying than "I work for a call centre" even if the call centre would be less stress and more money.

Thanks for the this guys, a few weeks ago I was buzzing and doing loads and more importantly I was getting people asking about work which is what drove me now I have nothing!

I do a lot of mentoring for IOSH, this helps me greatly. You are obviously talented, I feel certain there is voluntary work you could do. Youngsters would be very grateful indeed and the feeling it gives you is amazing.

I also moderate the IOSH forums, again this takes up time. When I am really stuck, I walk the dog (see Jack sighing....oh no, not again, I've been twice already!).

I have my model railway also which helps, Bonsai and gardening. I also research my profession daily to ensure I am as good as it gets.

My motivation,

is abit like what has been said, I love what i do, im quite an out going person and love that banter with customers.
You can find motivation in many different ways, not just how much money you earn.
I found a job i love, only been in the fish industry 5 years. My boss has been around in the buisness for 40 years his family for 80 years.
I would like to think i will take over when he his done in one way or another.

but my real motivation again is the customers.

i work alongside my boss, he has been in the industry 40 years, had this shop 15 years.
Phone rings, its for Sean
Customer comes in, they wait for sean, they will wait in a que 5 deep to be served by Sean
Resturant phones up they ask for Sean
A new customer comes in, recommened by a friend, they have been told to ask for Sean.
It feels good i will be honest. when people say go there and see Sean he will look after you.

with that i would like to carry on the place when he has fisnished, my estimate, 4 years. So i also what to build a buisness along side this one for ths one. So i can carry on, I will never get rich out of it, but could make a reasonable living. But everything i do is for where i work.

Im out the house 10 hours a day. and spend 2 to 3 hours a day, tweaking site. reading up, updating details, and booking out orders when i get home..

thats my motivation
