How do you name a business?

I'm going to be starting a Property maintenance company, and I'm nearly ready apart from the name. I keep going round in circles when it comes to a name. Everyone keeps telling me different things like make sure its obvious what you do, keep it short so people remember it and so on. What happens if you name your business and someone else has a similar name? Can you get sued? Never thought choosing a name would be so hard!

Thanks,

64,000 million dollar question! I reckon naming a business is just as hard as naming your kids! Maybe harder

I'm no expert and spent ages trying to come up with a name. But I think it helps (in hindsight) if your business name directly reflects what it is you do.

Let any potential customer not have to think about it too hard. "Bobs Plumbers" "Frank the Sparky" "John the WebDesigner"  Maybe a bit simplistic but you know what I mean.

If you are using a Company Formation agent, then most of them have a search bar that lets you type in the name of your new ltd or sole trader business, and will tell you if the name is available. If it is, and once registered, I don't think there is much anyone can do about it, unless you have gone for something daft like "I hate BT Ltd".

Then factor in your website assuming you are having one, and email domain, so try not to be too long, but make it recognisable so people understand your website relates to your business.

(He says, naming his business Lowi Ltd and having a URL of mylocalservices.co.uk)

So short, catchy, punchy and obvious, sounds easy eh?

See if anyone else has any words of wisdom, and let us know what you decide on (or give us a short list and we'll vote!)

Personally, I called mine "Resonate Media UK"  I do business photography and Video with the intention for companies to "resonate" with their online presence. All I would say is stick to something you like, that when you tell someone the name of the company you don't shy away. Also another thing you got to think you want something that will look nice on a logo and make sure sure if u abbreviate it, it doesn't spell out a naughty word . A few people have made that unfortunate mistake.  but yeah what i did was a word map i think it called, just cause it good for brainstorming. eg for this i would right in middle estate agents, then think of words relating to it, such as home, house, property, move etc and try see if that inspires me  gd luck and let us know what you come up with Lou

It's also important to make sure your name doesn't violate any legal restrictions, like these: http://www.companieshouse.gov.uk/about/gbhtml/gp1.shtml#appA

If you want to change your 'may share' to 'will share'...I really wouldn't take offence

na i don't want to change it to "will share" ...why would I want to do that...when I should change it to "have shared"  all the best Also am i aloud to recommend other fb pages to promote your site on? I am part of a few thing is my service doesn't do well. most of it is either crafters of people selling things they can be gifts (either to themselves or friends) I want to give you link as you may get a few sales from it but i don't want to break rules and get banned quicker than I get banned from pubs on nights out in glasgow  (that is a joke I am very responsible ) Just my passion is about promoting business (thats the purpose of my company) I like to see other people do well. Business shouldn't be dog eats dog all the time
