New DVLA rules as from today - car hire confusion?

DVLA has had some flak recently over it's plans to scrap the paper portion of your driving license. The problem is, although it seems daft to have a photo ID card and a paper portion, the paper bit is the important bit as it shows any convictions.

The DVLA plan is to move this information online and scrap the paper part, which sounds great  Until you want to hire a car in outer Mongolia or the rest of Europe who won't have access to the DVLA database, so will need proof that you haven't got any convictions.

But there's a typically British solution, if you go to the DVLA website before you go on holiday, they will give you a code, which may or may not be asked for  Oh, and it's only valid for 3 days..

DVLA CEO has hit back with criticism, "they could save their driving records from the DVLA website as a PDF file and store them on their mobile phone, and show any rental company if needed."

Or we could just keep the paper portion of our driving license..

Great quote.. "The government has defended the new system, saying it will save millions of pounds, and reduce red tape."

But confuse half the population, as well as foreign car rental companies.

Just to finish the story off, "The new arrangements are valid in Britain only. Northern Ireland has a separate licence scheme."  'nuff said...

If you were pulled over by the police an asked to produce your licence, and you said you never had it but you do have a pdf copy on your mobile phone, I think they would laugh at you. Not only that, you could in theory download the pdf to your phone at 8am, appear at the local magistrates court at 10am and get banned altogether for drink driving......this will be scammed to high heaven by those not legally entitled to drive...

Thanks,
Barney

This is preposterous!  It sounds like a debacle.

What they should have been doing is introducing some form of card which shows the points in your licence surely?  Or a card specifically for travel abroad as it won't be needed by everyone. Although I suppose they are expensive to update with points. I've never had any points so I'm not that familiar with them

Government IT projects? Nahhhhhhh

Maybe they could roll out a Costacoffe type card, and it has 12 stamps. When you get to 12, you send it off and wait a few years for a new one. Or combine it with your Tescos card, they seem to work all right

Never had any points, you've said it now....

I had a miss spent youth.... and got loads of points, bans, bans on top of bans.... most for speeding, and no insurance /mot/ road tax.... nothing serious though. Now I've got a clean licence been like that for nearly 6 months now, wont be clean long though as there are just too many cameras around today......

Thanks,

I actually stick to speed limits...shocking right?

Tut, tut Barney!!

I really can't see how this is supposed to make things clearer/simpler.

Love Steves approach - lump it with your supermarket rewards card

Coming from South Africa that piece of paper was really confusing and never saw the point in it , the card on it own works well as it should always be to hand anyway .... Although the point system is a waste of time too as you get fined with most stuff so it should be enough....

I don't speed any-more because of high price of fines ,but that should be brought in here as well..Would you speed if the fines started at say £100 no you wouldn't ,with points you always think you have enough time between them to be OK.

Before you say it camera's are a good thing but they really do need more of them around. I travel around 100 miles a day and only see the camera team about once a months ,in SA you were lucky to see just 2 a day

Last I heard camera wise, most of them had been switched off as the local authorities couldn't afford to maintain them. I know the one I see on the way home from work got blown up by the Warwickshire Militia over 6 months a go and never got repaired.

Meanwhile the death trap road outside our kids school doesn't even warrant a lollipop lady, but that's a different rant
