Argos wobbles and boss steps down... 27th April 2011 10:14 PM
... But the prices are very cheap!

The customer profile probably includes a huge percentage of one purchase consumers (the "never again" crew) plus enough loyal punters to keep the business going.
What's interesting to me is that:

-WEF does the objective research into job growth and concludes that 99% small businesses don't contribute to this.

It does the further research into some of the reasons why 1% small businesses are successful in growing jobs (eg they're run by managers who install and use good management systems).

It sensibly suggests we need to research further so we can increase the percentage of small businesses that successfully produce job growth from the present dire 1% up to 2%, 3% etc.

And what does the government do during this time of high unemployment? Throw public money at small businesses, either not knowing or not caring that the research says 99% will be wasted as regards job growth. Makes you weep.

How nice to hear from VirtuallyMary again after what seems like a long gap!

The best route I ever found to closing the (work) gap between where I was and where I hoped to be was through membership of Action Centred Learning Groups (ACL). These are co-coaching groups where your colleagues help you suss out an issue that concerns you and find solutions for it ... and knowing you have to report back on progress at the next meeting sustains the motivation to do whatever you said you would do!

To some extent MLF acts as a virtual ACL group.
Will article Marketing Die? 15th April 2011 10:08 PM
Maybe the jury's still out?

Ezinearticles.com took one big hit from Panda ... then another. So apparently did lots of other similar directories.

I'll carry on posting ezine articles - at least for a bit.

UK Hosting companies..... 14th April 2011 12:12 PM
We are a .com but I've told Webmaster Tools we're UK based so that's sorted then ....

Thanks sjr4x4.
Today's Leicester Mercury said all the businesses selling "discretionary" products and services (eg professional business services) are having a bad time. Can easily believe that - we're a tight lot round here and don't throw our cash about in the best of times (which now certainly isn't).
UK Hosting companies..... 13th April 2011 5:36 PM
No contribution to make to the topic so I'll go off at a tangent!!

If your market is UK based and you're a UK company, does Google penalise you on search if your server isn't UK based, plse? I've heard that's exactly what Google does - but feel the informant must have got it wrong as commercially this approach wouldn't make sense.
I'm not interested in talking to anyone over breakfast - but sessions later in the day (centred around a topic that interests me and a chance to chat to others over a coffee or two) have been worthwhile.

What often happens is that you've a chance to identify people with whom you'd happily work on a joint project (and vice versa). Sometimes it's just a chance to learn and be sociable. On the whole, I think formal networking meetings have been over-hyped.
Oil prices surge to fresh highs... 8th April 2011 10:08 PM
... But petrol prices are really hitting all the mega shopping centres (Metro, etc) which need plentiful supplies of non-local shoppers and the big shops there will be screaming blue murder. I'm sure George would do something to help if he could only think of a good wheeze.
