Naming and Shaming on Forums

Had my wrist slapped on another forum for asking a contributor to name the holiday company with whom he's recently had a problem which was sorted out by a travel expert on the forum site.  The site in question is for "silver travellers" affiliated to Age UK (it's not Saga).  The reason for not naming was fear of litigation.  In another post about last week's French air traffic controllers strike, a different person was allowed to name a certain low cost airline when they wouldn't refund the purchase of flights with another airline, only refunding cost of their cancelled return flight.

I'm used to looking at a business travellers' website and forum, where there are no such limits and their user names often reflect their view of a particular airline.  I'll see how long it takes them to notice I'm not contributing any more but can't delete my profile.  A fit of pique I know, but I should have read the signs when posting a couple of travel security tips and some responses were "if we thought about this, we'd never go out".

Yes, I fit into that age group but don't/won't adopt the mindset......

We have named companies on here to good effect, but usually only if they have spammed us or we are warning others of shamefully practices and conning businesses out of money or shambolic customer service.

Not sure if I'm eligible to be a silver surfer as most of hair has long gone

It's a fine art sometimes when it comes to naming and shaming. After running review websites for the last 11 years, and forums for around 6, we've certainly upset a few people over the years

We have a few shaming threads:

Business Scams and Cons to be aware of

Warnings, Name and Shame Dumping Ground

Marketing Fail - Learn from the mistakes of others!

But if it's factual and not malicious, then I don't have a problem with it, although from experience lots of behind the scenes checks are done as we have had countless competitor bashing, including directors of the same firm at war with each other, or brothers with separate companies trying to destroy each other

But it keeps life interesting...

In contrast, it's also good to name and praise, which is something most people don't do enough of, me included. We are all guilty of shouting and ranting, especially in the heat of the moment, but it takes time and effort to praise.

Hmmm, just had a look at our business praise thread, and saw it was 10 months since anything was added  Then realised the thread had auto locked (a little anti spam trick we have), whoops. So have now unlocked it, and lets see if anyone has been wowed recently by some customer service...

Businesses that aren't yours but you would recommend

Thanks for your view on this one Steve. Don't worry about your hair falling out, it will save you money

I haven't bothered to look at that particular site today and I feel a lot better for it!  I believe that if it was factual then the company should have been exposed for its unacceptable practices.  I don't condone false reviews/complaints by those seeking their moment in the sun.

I actually posted something unrelated on the business traveller website last night and made someone's day. The thread was about strange travel stories, so here goes.  Director visits company branch in Lagos.  He asks fellow Director (ex-pat) where he can get some cigarettes.  Director calls in his driver and gives him three brands of cigarettes that he can purchase.  If he can't get any of those then he can bring something else.  Driver returns with a meat pie.....

Well my fit of pique with a certain silver travellers' site has come up to bite me.

I've won an annual pass for the London Transport Museum in Covent Garden.  They offered 10 as prizes for descriptions of best train journeys.

I've accepted the prize gracefully; far better than the 3-day mystery cruise departing Harwich.  No offence to anyone living in that area!  Would have spent nearly half of prize value in accommodation, parking, petrol, etc and it wasn't with a cruise company that I rated highly anyway.  They have now offloaded it to someone else.

Said prize arrived on Saturday.  An annual pass it may have been when issued on 29 June 2016.  If I was going to be a regular user, I would have been very miffed to find 3 months already taken off its validity.

Methinks I'll stick to entering competitions where the prize is worth having

I have had a couple of great results after naming two big companies on MLF and then posting them a direct link to my 'public complaint'.

I wont re-name and shame then again because both issues were resolved quickly and efficiently (after they were named and shamed). Both were very big companies who were simply trying to bully and intimidate the small guy, it is incredible how powerful negative publicity can be, especially on the net.

I do however agree with Steve in that we hardly ever publicly praise good service...

Thanks,
