Sully - the Miracle on the Hudson

Went to see this film late Saturday afternoon.  For anyone who hasn't yet seen it but plans to, I'll try not to spoil it.  It's 96 minutes long, 12A rating and also available in IMAX.  Directed by Clint Eastwood, with Tom Hanks as "Sully" and Aaron Eckhart as First Officer Jeff Skiles.

On 15 January 2009, Capt Chesley Sullenberger landed his crippled Airbus on the Hudson river.  This film covers what happened after the event in terms of the investigation and personal reactions.   Even the credits at the end were worth watching as they showed the passengers meeting with Capt Sullenberger and his crew.  Great proof of strangers working together to achieve a positive outcome (or Crew Resource Management for those familiar with the industry).

I wanted to see it over again immediately but unfortunately you're not allowed to do that anymore! Next time, yes there is a next time, I'm going to a more modern cinema to hopefully see it in IMAX.  Sorry Empire Sutton Coldfield, you did your best but my nearly 12 year old niece expects better.....

Saw this advertised and remember it in the news, absolutely incredible. Not so convinced of the film format though, is there enough meat to make it interesting enough? After all, you know whats going to happen, so there isn't a twist, or is there?

A lot of people have questioned what you can make of an event that took 208 seconds from start to finish so it concentrates on the investigation, which gets a bit technical at times and the PTSD suffered by Capt Sullenberger (a topic I hadn't thought of).

Yes there is a twist but I'm not going to give it away.  Let's just say that very often the crew are not available to justify their decisions......

I've recommended it to someone who did a thesis on flight crew stress; will be interesting to hear his view from the human factors aspect.

I remember this event and also the media hype thereafter.

Haven't seen the film yet, not sure i will, i wonder if the twist surrounds Sully and his alleged celeb status and how he conducted himself during & following the investigation. I also remember rumours about his co-pilot not being 100% behind his actions... allegations, rumours & the usual gutter press reporting what they like - perfect recipe for a block buster

Saw the trailer and was thinking that it is kinda boring. since you said that there is a twist in the story, I might give this movie a try.

Got to see it again, this time in IMAX (Resorts World, Birmingham).  My niece decided she preferred her own "Disney type" version of the remaining geese carrying the aircraft down onto the river!

Unfortunately the gutter press have a field day with stories like this because the majority of readers (no disrespect to anyone here) will accept what they print because they don't know/not interested in knowing what really happened and the journalists don't have much idea either so make things up to sell newspapers, etc.

Having read a book on the subject by an aviation expert and viewed some of the YouTube videos, the film did a good job in balancing fact with drama.    Watching a video of a presentation given by the First Officer to an aviation related audience, Sully was doing what a captain should do but relying on his FO to support him, which he did.  The movie didn't cover the PTSD suffered by the FO (dramatic weight loss and lack of sleep) and no doubt other members of the crew and passengers.

One minor thing that bugged me though was the rings on Tom Hanks's fingers kept swapping over.  Wedding ring moved from left to right and back again, as did a decorative signet ring....

Thats just sloppy continuity, but also bad on Tom Hanks's part. Really should know which finger to wear a wedding ring !

Not a plane buff, but do like a Tom Hanks film and did like that one where he crash landed on a desert island. So I'd give it a go on Julia's recommendation  Are you on commission lol.

Sadly, not on commission ,  just interested as ex worked in the industry (systems, not "up front"); used to point out different "noises" during flight and slept for most of journey as he viewed take off and landing as the most interesting parts.  Couple of ex-colleagues were private pilot and glider pilot respectively.  I know it's an unusual interest for a girl.......

I'd already seen Captain Philips so didn't watch again last night, but Brother has taped it.  Can't think of a Tom Hanks film that's been a "turkey"??
