Does anyone know if 7 will just overwrite vista or will i have to load 7 then remove vista. i do not want to lose everythinhg i have done on the computer, but things are really annoying me now.

Hi i am running vista ultimate at the moment and am getting quite a few conflicts with some of the programmes i am using, which is annoying, the worst one is that microsoft outlook keeps stopping when i am online and i lose everything and have to start over. Does anyone know if 7 will just overwrite vista or will i have to load 7 then remove vista. i do not want to lose everythinhg i have done on the computer, but things are really annoying me now. ![]() Thanks, ithas2bedone
Hi Have a look at this Microsoft Link Windows 7 Upgrade Paths Seems as though there's no upgrade from Vista Ultimate to Win 7 Pro. Apparently you would be downgraing your system. So it looks like you either install Win 7 Ultimate using the "Upgrade" option or a custom install from Win 7 Pro. make sure you've got a reliable backup first. Another thought re application problems: Have you tried running somehing like "Malwarebytes Anti Malware" (can use for free) over the PC. had an issue a while ago where IE8 kept throwing errors and crashing. Norton AV didn't find anything, but Malwarebytes found someting and fixed the problem. Dave
I'm also running Vista Ultimate, and regret every minute of it, wish I was still on XP, and like you am loathe to upgrade to Win 7, but when I do, I'll allocate the time and do a clean install. Previous experiences of MS upgrades have been messy and I think it's better to blatt your hard drive and start fresh. (after backing it up ![]() Vista is a memory hog, if your running the 32 bit version, you really need a minimum of 3GB of RAM, but ideally 4GB. If your using internet explorer or firefox as your web browser, scrap them and move to Chrome. FF and IE are bloated and slow, and will tie up your system resources. Latest version of chrome is great, lightweight and a much smaller memory footprint. I've gone from a daily reboot and 3 - 4 outlook crashes, to nothing ever since I stopped using FF and IE and switched to chrome. Can't believe the difference. I was on the verge of upgrading to Win 7 out of total frustration, but now finally Vista seems to be running ok. So maybe worth a try, it's free so wont cost you anything other than customising your browser. If you do, make sure you make chrome is your default browser, so IE/FF don't get called at all.
How do i get my shortcuts on a toolbar from explorer to chrome, i cant see a link anywhere? Thanks, ithas2bedone
Top right of the chrome browser, you'll see a spanner symbol, click on it, select bookmark manager On second tab, it says "Organise", click this and bottom option is import bookmarks. (you need to export from IE, file - import&export - export to file - favourites) Me personally, I use common bookmarks as icons, to do this, I add them to the bookmark bar, but delete the text, so only the icon shows, that way fit most of your regular favourite sites. (hit the star symbol - in the folder option, select bookmarks bar, but remove the website name from the name tab.)
Cheers i have sorted that and hopefully i have removed all of the outlook programme. it has not crashed since i changed over so fingers crossed. Cheers again steve Thanks, ithas2bedone
I didn't have time to read what the others wrote, but if you are asking, if you can upgrade, then yes. Windows 7 is great. Not because I am in IT. It just works as it should. Ryan Ryan
Hi There, I agree with Scootek, Its thousand times better than Vista Business and works like it should and XP Pro used to with lots more features ![]() Tom
cheers chaps i have removed the outlook and things seem better, i am trying to get around chrome at the moment and i keep forgetting where i am and keep having to start again, but i am getting there. i have ordered 7 pro. and hopefully it will be here this week, hopefully i can just load and go and then remove vista in the normal way. Thanks again Steve Thanks, ithas2bedone
Win 7 Pro is brilliant, I would upgrade from the dog of Vista immediately, but as Steve says I would do a full clean install. Though unlike previous MS upgrade nightmares, we do upgrades every day and with win 7 it just works, In fact it first analises your system and tells you exactly which drivers you ned to have before upgrading. then you go get them and upgrade. Just do it you want look back 7 is the best OS microsoft have ever done, and lets face it after vista it had to be! Cloud4 |
