I have just noticed that a domain with my targeted key phrase has become available.
Would it be worth it buying it and make it pointing to my website?
Would this add any value to the SEO?
Or is there any other benefit of buying the domain?

Thanks,

Keyword in domain name have good impact on search engine ranking. Search engine give extra on having domain name with keyword.

Keyword in domain name have good impact on search engine ranking. Search engine give extra on having domain name with keyword.

That is clear, however the question is about the specific scenario where the website is not built originally with the domain. The new domain would only redirect the user to the website.

In others words lets say the website was originally built for the domain _mydomain.com_

Now the domain _keyword.com_ is available.
I can by that domain and point it to the _mydomain.com_ website.
So when you type either of the two domains in the address line you would be directed to the same website.

So, there are two questions that I have:
1. By doing this "redirection" with the _keyword.com_ , would it add any value?
2. Is there anything else I could do with _keyword.com_
? Why would I buy it?

It's a tough one, supposedly it will add value, and in theory, if you redirect your old URL to the new one, then any accumulated linking juice should be passed to the new domain.

But some will argue that redirecting doesn't pass all the link juice.

Redirecting the new URL to the old one would be pointless.

Guess it's down to cost, if the domain is pretty cheap, then go for it, but make sure it's done properly, and update Google WMT.

Keywords in the title is nice, and should help, but in my opinion, it's not the be all and end all. So if a major hassle or expense, then leave it as it is.

Steve, can you elaborate this please?

If you're not comfortable with the process of changing DNS records and redirecting URL's, then get your web guy to do it for you.

In webmaster tools, you have the option to tell Google that you are moving address:

My view is that:
1. A redirection is probably worthless.
2. By buying the domain, you are stopping a potential competitor from acquiring it and using it successfully.
3. I would probably purchase it with a view to developing a new website targeting this keyword. (although you would then need to allocate marketing budget against it in order to make the new website rank). I have managed enough websites to say categorically that domains such as keyword.com produce better long-term rankings.

But dont you think preforming this would affect Global targeting of your website....

I have had two websites with keywords within the address and it has worked very well for me, I does help towards SEO, I know this depends on the website but you have to think about all of the effort you put in to the name of you old website and how much it has been branded. What kind of website is it?

If you do decide to buy it, check the domain isn't banned and has no bad history!
