@Dreamraven, yes you are right, you should have a number of nofollow links to make your link profile look natural.

All old news since Google released the anti-negative SEO tool, Disavow Links last week.

It is a game changer regarding links, and life for SEO's will never be easy again.

Cheap links are dead, Google Disavow Tool come online

Hmm not so convinced with the disavow tool, personally I think it just fuels the link miss-information and hysteria...

Googles Disavow Tool - becareful... be very careful!

I'm afraid. Didn't understand what now I do? Previous I doing link building according to below process:

Title: Exact match Keyword...............

After Google penguin update this is necessary to drop your link on same Discussion(relevant) website. Also please keep in mind always post your link on Google index (try high PR) pages.Bulk of irreverent or 0 pr or non-google index link does not have any worth now!

I think it's all about communicating these days. For example in forums such as this, blogs in your niche, sumbitting your site to applicable directories such as, a list of 'harley davidson sites in Kent' if you have a site which sells Harley Davidson's in Kent of course plus get started on Facebook, Twitter and Google + and communicate with other businesses.

No harm in starting your own blog and giving tips on the things your an expert in.

Best of luck!

Nice question! I thought of this this question a lot! Of the question, I read a lot, analyzed, and got a solution at last as I have been making backlinks for my clients, promoting their sites in social media. And in the mean time, I came across various kind of clients, found some are completely misled by others of SEO after panda, penguin and EMD update by Google. I found them helpless!!

What I suggested them-

** Try to understand the aim of updates Google made.

Aim of the updates:

** Updates not to harm but for keeping everything in right way.
** To value the quality sites.
** To discourage the spammers,
** To clean WWW....
** To welcome quality people in this areas!

Result of Update:

** Site without quality, only having a lot backlinks with 2/3 KWs got punishment.
** Good sites got rewarded.
** spammers bowled out!
** Social Media Marketing came on the stage!

Warning-
The play is still running

Thanks,

Don't worry so much about link building. Links will come. Work on building a business that people across the web will want to link to naturally.

This is a forever changing game, expect Google to change it into something else very soon.

I believe G+ will have a great revelation this year on it's true influence over search. If I was going to choose one Social platform to concentrate on to boost SEO, that's where my money would be.

agree totally, though think G+ prominence will be more like an 18/24 month strategy than just 2014. From there, it will be take stock and see where the new landscape lies, in our new semantic and structure data world
