Clever marketing or genuine brand defence?

Nearly named the thread "Any publicity is good publicity?"

It seems Mars (thats chocolate not red planet ) has picked on a Chip Shop in Scotland, the reputed birth place of the deep fried Mars Bar.

They have been asked to put up disclaimers that the product is not endorsed by Mars.

"Mars is concerned that the deep-frying of its products is not in line with its policy of promoting a healthy lifestyle and it is keen to take steps to protect its own brand"
BBC News - Deep-fried Mars bars disowned by chocolate firm

Hmmm, what a load of cobblers, would you consider Mars to be part of a healthy diet Anyone remember the Mars hovercraft adverts which told us a Mars a day helped us to work rest and play...

A Mars a day!! I wouldn't fit through the door.

But it's a good PR spin. A chocolate product manufacturer up in arms because their unhealthy product is being associated with unhealthy eating practices.

At first rub I'd say it would be good publicity for the Chip Shop...I'd certainly like to try a deep fried Mars bar.

Definitely. Would love to know how the chocolate doesn't melt at that temperature as well.

Id it my imagination or are a lot of companies taking the apple way out? Fight now, make a news spectacle of yourself in the hope that someone buys more of your products? or, do they somehow think a deep fried mars bar can overtake their claims to riches in the chocolate bar industry? Seriously, chocolate is healthy, but if memory serves its dark chocolate that is the healthiest. not the stuff they pack a chocolate bar with, the cocoa content is too low (methinks). Maybe its the peanuts then?

That's not a deep fried mars bar, it's a sausage in butter What's wrong with fried mars bar? It's kind of like hot chocolate. Now I am thinking pan frying(maybe oven baked) one this afternoon.

Thanks,

I read this news snippet with interest, being in the mars a day club (and still being able to fit through the door ) - to be honest i dont know what all the fuss is about.

Seems this isnt a new craze and by all accounts its a 1 time thing, try it and probably never go back .... not quite sure why Mars are getting so upset.

May be the question should be once you by a product does the manufacturer of said product have the right to dictate how that product is eaten?

As i dont like their ice-cream version i I often freeze my mars bars n chew on it for about an hour (is it any wonder why my teeth are so bad ) - is that against their rules?

Looking at all the recent developments where Google is coming out with new strategies to create a better user experience it is always better to go with a clever marketing strategy accompanied with a good brand defense.

It is clever marketing by Mars as chocolate is junk food and they know it BUT people cannot resist it.

Steve - I eat what I like including loads of chocolate and high calorie stuff but stay at 12 stone (6' 2"). If you exercise, play sports and don't sit around all day (not saying you do) you will keep getting through that door.

Hmm, the theory is great, I'm a fitness expert and can preach to anyone about exercise and balanced diets. Losing weight is easy, burn more energy than you take in... Put the pie down and back away... But practising my own advice is a different kettle of fish!

Little nippers keep you fairly fit and the mission is now back on to dump some weight and stay awake in the afternoon.

Now where do I get some bigger doors?
