Any locksmiths I've ever come across seem to be doing fine. Maybe it's one of those markets that appears to be recession proof.

If you want any genuine and serious replies, then maybe start off by explaining by what you have tried so far, and maybe this will generate some feedback.

Rather than arrive, no introduction, no contribution, and a "I want to grow my business and make more money, please tell me how"

True that. However here are some common things that can help a business grow. Create a USP. distribute flyers. Identify potential customers and approach them specifically.

I can't comment on the USA, but in the UK there is a lot more competition for locksmithery services. Shoe shops, cobblers and general stores now cut keys and sell lock related products.

I'd try to concentrate on specialist services and commercial accounts, particularly for large organisations or public bodies. It might be worth targeting some organisations and calling to ask how you can get on their approved supplier lists.

Additional information on the state of your business, your skills, and the different marketing strategies you have tried before would be immensely helpful so that people could give their two-cents. Perhaps the reason that your business is not doing so well is the same reason that it is hard to give you advice right now: people do not know you or what you can do, making your name very easy to forget. For a locksmith business, one thing that could give you an edge is being able to open special locks that can't be opened by just about anyone with a hammer. It is a business that relies on both skill and equipment, so you could focus on these two things aside from marketing.

Be seen. By this i mean your have started off right by joining forums etc and this is a platform to work off. I have a locksmiths business based in London and it is doing really well.

My advice to you would be to either start promoting locally of get yourself on social media site such as FB, Twitter, forums etc.

We managed to get lucky with the local police and we fix the locks of all the houses that they raid and this has got us over 50% of our business. It's either a good thing due to our good work or a bad thing as there must be too many dodgy people out there. LOL

One excellent way to get good business is to try doing a few freebie jobs and look for those jobs that some people may have given up on. These can really help boost your rep. Some churches or maybe a museum may need your specialized skills. Take it from me mate. Four years in the biz and aside from emergency calls in odd hours, I do alright myself...avoid the gals and hard booze Cheers!

no doubt freebie jobs works. But it will also become hard to charge them money after some time when they get your service again. or they will give you little amount.

Stick your service flyers in parking lot. Real estate offices, in subway. Do social media marketing. Create page on social media and share tips regarding locks. You have to engage traffic on the page. So people will get know what things you are offering.
