Ok, with over two years worth of cig money to spend, approx £7500 what is the best used car to buy? What should be avoided? My last two cars were Citroen C5 and a vauxhall vectra. Thinking about a qashqi....thoughts?  Or

I can tell I'm getting old, I had to Google it! A Qashqi? Can't even pronounce it

Looks like a wannabe 4x4. Is it designed to go over sleeping policeman very quickly? (that's speed bumps to non UK visitors, not running over lazy cops )

I'm seeing you in a Pickup Truck, with bull bars and winches

You are right Steve the qashqi is a 4x4 lookalike, they are actually called crossovers. I think that they try to give you the increase in drive height and comfort without the excessive fuel consumption of a 4x4. The better half suggested it and as yet I can't find a better alternative for the money.

i would however love a pickup truck, regrettably that's not practical for the grandchildren

My friend had the Qashqi as a company car. He thought it was ok but his wife hated it, but there again she didnt like his previous car which was a passat estate.

I loved his passat, drove it a few times. Liked it so much i bought a CC version, before trading it for my Audi.

Qashqi wise, its comfortable, great driving position. I found some of the interior a bit plastic, but guessing his model was near enough base entry.

He also had a VW Touran, but that again was a bit sparse on gadgets, except auto parking which is quite scary! Thats a bit bigger and has 7 seats.

Lots of different cars out there, only one i would recommend you stay away from are Renaults - i had 3 lagunas and loved them, right up until my last 1 that had a faulty gearbox, 3 months after its 3 year warranty ran out, needed a new bearing - wanted £5k!!! Did offer some contribution but not enough for my liking so vowed there & then never to have another, nor ever recommend them!

Love car shopping, or just waffling about them, keep us posted

Not yet, just finished work for two weeks, building a decked area this weekend and then buying the car late next week. Seen a few I like, just not ready to part with the cash just yet....

Funny enough I've had a Renault traffic van for the last 14 years, never previously had much issue with them. Bought another new one in May 2012, in October last year the gearbox was replaced, in March of this year it was replaced again. It has done 25,008 miles on both occasions it was covered under the warranty agreement (4 years / 100,000 miles) when I went to pick the van up again the Renault dealership said the van was not designed to carry tradesmen's tools and would no longer cover the vehicle under the warranty agreement..... Not my problem I told him, the vehicle belongs to Renault finance which the business has a hire purchase agreement with, so he would have to take it up with them.... I think they think we're all mugs....

Thanks,
Barney
