Ahhh, yes the pesky virus on a PC.

MAC users don't care much for virus -- since the OS is based on UNIX which is built with networking in mind way way back when Windows PC was nil/did not exist yet.

All the same - M$ Windows - has the greatest market share and judging from this thread -- almost everyone is using them, even servicing corporate entities.

I say, even with the best anti virus around -- virus still spread specially if the computer is used as a workstation -- there are just too much indifference in computer users at work -- not caring that their infected USB thumb drives infect every unit it touches.

I recommend using MACs at work -- or if you're short on budget -- one of those Linux distros which can handle any normal desktop applications used (web browsing, spreadsheets, word processing, music listening, viewing videos, image editing -- more if you're willing to spend time learning a new system.)

The question is how much would it cost to move to another operating system and is it worth it in the long run?

Some of these Linux Distros are getting better and better, but I can imagine the reaction in the office if we dumped MS for Linux and Open Office....

hmm calculates symantec license costs as we approach that time of year again...

Apart from the worry about whether "picking up something" will kill your computer (naturally this'll happen on a Sunday, just before you've finished a report that has to be ready for 9.00am Monday), do you want to feel personally responsible for infecting all your friends' / colleagues' / the world's computers??????

I used a freebie AV for a short while until it failed to pick up the first virus I was aware of - I now use Symantec and am paranoid about being up to date on scans, Windows updating and so on. My computers mystify me often enough without me having to worry about their health.

Best wishes, Linda

Yup -- that's basically what it is -- wished more and more schools provide Education on Linux, not just M$.

ESET is by far - the best product I have ever used.
Nothing works 100% no matter what anyone claims.
But I agree, we use it ourselves and are in fact, a UK Partner.

No bias here - I've personally used many antivirus products and nothing has ever come close to this one.

Remember - if something is free - it's not going to be great.
Where is the incentive to be 100% the best (for no income)

... And is something nasty happening to MyLocalForums plse? Some of the alleged replies (Dec 28) sound a bit spammy (ie generalised /bland, short, etc)? Or is it me just getting paranoid again?

We've had a few spammers over the hols, and must admit I'd been under orders to stay offline for a week But having a good clean up today, and can see Tomsk has been doing some deleting

Normal service is resumed....
