I'd have to agree that free listings on certain directories can do more harm than good, but it does depend on the type of business you are in. For example if you were a high-end architect then a free ad would not look very good for the business! Where as other businesses may see beneficial results. At the end of the day though, directories are not the best place for maximum exposure, but as part of a marketing strategy. The most important of which, although not strictly speaking a directory, would be Google Places, a well filled out and optimised account on there will do wonders for your local advertising response.
