Hi Guys,

Not sure if this has been discussed on the forum yet but its something that small business owners should probably get a heads up about.

On the 21st April 2015 Google will be releasing an algorym change aka "the mobile update".

According to quite a few sources this is going to be a big one and is likely to penalise individuals's sites that are not "mobile friendly".

You can check if your site is mobile friendly, using the Google tool here: https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/mobile-friendly/

If your site comes up with a "yes" you have nothing to worry about (unless you want to get technical.) If it comes up with a "no" I would highly recommend seeking a mobile optimisation or responsive web design service.

The full ins and outs of the update can be found:http://moz.com/blog/9-things-about-googles-mobile-friendly-update

If you have any questions give me a shout or just post here.

Thanks,

Tom.

Yep, know all about it. If you have a non-responsive website then your rankings will only be affected when users search using a mobile (or tablet) device. ie you'll start to appear lower in the results.

Yup I know about this my google pages keep telling me I am not friendly ...

Although I am in the middle of getting my site made responsive ,just waiting for the test site to be completed so I can say yes or no .. If he can't it will possibly mean I will have to rebuild from scratch which I am hoping is not the case

All clean and green here  Or awesome in Google parlance

Our MLS sites are a separately designed mobile site, which is high maintenance to upkeep, as you are effectively managing 2 individual websites. But is does give you the opportunity to completely customise the site for mobile viewers and we've taken this approach for the last few years.

We've just launched a service for the City of Edinburgh Council and this is our first foray into responsive design. It does have some limitations over a dedicated mobile site, but is much more efficient to manage.

Interesting to read in the Moz article that Google seems to be backing off some of the responsive design hysteria and is acknowledging that there are other ways of presenting your site. Was worried for a while that  redirected m.domains would get downgraded but that doesn't seem to be the case. m.domains should be held in the same regard as responsive sites.

For the average site owner though, responsive designs should make the most economic and practical sense.

I do love the irony though of the Moz mobile announcement web page....

Apparently the Moz engineers are working on it, so it will be mobile friendly by the 21st

Personally (and as a Moz subscriber) I find it inexcusable that Moz has been bumbling along for so long with a mobile unfriendly site.

But also full of admiration for Rand Fishkin (former boss and now not sure what he is?) who has also decided to use the Moz site as a Google algorithm guinea pig.

Also great coverage and PR as well

Yeah Rand's a solid guy, quite smart actually what they are doing with the non-mobile friendly moz site. And yeah great PR too!

That is not a problem to make your site mobile friendly.

I just went to freelance forum, posted a message about my site mobile unfriendliness, and In a minute I had a heap of propositions to help me in my trouble for the trifling sum.

Nowadays is not a problem to find the right guy at the right time.

lol isn't it just ... I keep getting emails about it too

Today is the day, Mobilegeddon!  Great phrase been touted around by Search Engine Land.

So has anyone noticed anything yet? Has the update arrived on our shores or is it inbound like a cold weather front

Did notice that sites are now marked as mobile friendly when you see them in the mobile search results. Mind you it could have been saying that for 12 months for all I know.

Also notice Moz is being true to their word, and using the site as a test, with the site remaining mobile unfriendly.

So is anyone worried about the update, is your site mobile friendly or in the process of being made friendly, or couldn't you give two hoots?

This only affects the mobile search results, but supposedly non mobile friendly pages will slide down the results. With more and more traffic coming from smart phones and smaller tablets, you could be potentially losing a lot of exposure. May be worth checking your analytics and see where your visitors are coming from, a desktop or mobile.

Great article though from Matt McGee, editor of Search Engine land who also runs a hobby U2 fan site. His site has been around since the 90's, is well curated, well respected with a loyal fan base and sits in the top 3 results for mobile and desktop for U2 - but isn't mobile friendly.

Hi main argument - Is mobile friendly more important than trusted content? ie would Mobile friendly trump more respected in the search results? Cosmetic over substance?

Great point and interesting debate, one it seems Google aren't keen to answer... yet

I must admit I think it's over the top as I can zoom around most sites easy enough.  I've come across sites that aren't responsive or mobile friendly but I happily adjust my phone/tablet as needed to read what I want to read.

However, Google is king, so for anybody not to cater for these changes are potentialy losing business, whether that be via a direct mobile friendly site or through having a responsive website.   It is the way forward after all....
