Social Cleansing! 17th February 2013 10:20 PM
Reality is that probably 60% these Camden "refugees" have local jobs (they're entitled to Housing Benefit because their wages are too low to live on). Obviously the ConDems think the UK's unemployment rate isn't high enough yet.
oh -

do you think they might want some slugs and snails got tons of them in the garden

... for those who want snail lungworm disease instead of all the nastinesses connected with bute???
HMRC plan to reduce overhead by 7th February 2013 1:20 PM
HRMC have said they'll make a more determined effort to go after the "big boys" evading tax so that could explain why they're hopeful of increasing the tax take. You'd expect them to have to employ more highly trained, experienced and tough-minded tax inspectors to do that though ...

They're probably doing less routine chasing of very small businesses - that'd reduce their costs but hardly affect tax take.
Do you think that swimming is fun? 31st January 2013 1:36 PM
I'd always understood swimming pools add a chemical to the water which changes colour around the pee, so shaming the pee-er!

May be untrue but if enough swimmers believe it, it'll work as a deterrent
I'm no lawyer but am confident I'm right on the next bit ....

A contract signed with someone not capable of making a legal agreement due to mental incapacity (eg moderate dementia) is void.

Reputable companies will back off as soon as this issue is raised and they're told about the existence of supporting proof (eg the local authority has exempted the person agreeing the contract from paying Council Tax on the grounds of mental frailty).

Disreputable companies may try blustering and bullying but they'll also know they daren't risk a court case to try to enforce payment (it'd bring them unwanted attention from the authorities) and they wouldn't win one.
Child Benefit changes - fair or unfair? 23rd January 2013 7:57 PM
During the 1945 General Election Bevan told his audience:

"We have been the dreamers, we have been the sufferers, now we are the builders.

Would so love polticians to be summat more than over-paid bums on seats ...

Hi Sam

You posted that each time you gave up smoking, you gave it up for longer ...so you're getting better and better at vanquishing the dreaded weed! Celebrate your past successes and build on them, it's just a matter of choosing the time that's right for you.

Rooting for you, kid.
Agreed ...

There's the old saw "What comes around, goes around". IE if I don't do my best - within my means - to stop you being exploited and harmed, then when I need your help, you certainly won't feel any obligation to help me.

The way the UK is going, my approach is pragmatic politics and economics! We're going to be the ones earning equivalents of 17p a day for foreign bosses!

It's also good business sense often because companies that build in ethics as part of their trading principles appear to do better than more overtly short-termist, selfish businesses. John Lewis, for example, had a good year in bad trading conditions.

Thinking of you, hoping the Sunday blues have lifted.

I've never watched "Gone With The Wind" (quite an achievement that considering how often it's repeated!) but the one bit I'd take as my motto is "tomorrow is another day" .

Have had my own bit of a helping hand recently ... You know I've been trying to lose 7lbs - 9lbs winter fat for a whole year? I got a virus that left me not wanting to eat and lost 6lbs in 6 days - only another 3lbs to go!

Vanilla milk sounds really scrumptious.

You're entitled - nay duty-bound - to investigate lots of new ways to give yourself "treats" (it's not self-indulgence, it's "self-managing" and so A Good Thing!).
