Why do many professional business people opt to use a cheap sitebuilder website? 7th January 2013 6:13 PM I have to agree with this, not to hijack the thread but it goes hand in hand with not having a correct business email address. In my opinion nothing looks worse than being a business and having an "@googlemail.com / @hotmail.com" domain, just screams out not professional, to me! This is one of my pet hates, luckily it seems I am not alone!! ![]() Windows OS cell phones! 19th December 2012 8:27 PM I guess you are referencing windows Phone 8, the most recent version of the windows mobile operating system. Although I don't own one, I have been looking at them fairly closely recently. They look well laid out with most if not all of the applications you would likely run, I currently own an iPhone and was able to find the windows versions of almost every app I would require. Perhaps the biggest benefit for me is that the business is built on Microsoft Office 365, which has incredibly tight integration with the new Windows phone 8. I should be able to work fairly seamlessly from it, it will give me outlook for email, Lync for instant messaging my colleagues and the office apps to look at documents on the go. I guess it depends on what ecosystem your phone is and how easy it will be to move and how much learning curve will be needed. In my case it should be almost nothing..... hopefully! ![]() The blog is no more... well at least mine anyway... 28th November 2012 1:36 PM Yeah keeping a blog going does require more work than I think I anticipated! However I think if its done right the rewards are great! He says with a guilty conscience, and wondering when he last posted something!!! We spoke to a couple of people who provide SEO type service about it, but decided that for the type of technical articles we tend to write it would be difficult to "outsource". However they did give us some pointers, perhaps the most useful tip they gave us was to make good use of the scheduling feature (our is a WordPress blog), you can create a blog or two when you have time and ensure that you schedule them to go out at regular intervals, that way you can start to create a bit of a backlog of them, which ideally you'd create in any downtime, then rack them up. Coincidentally this feature was recently introduced in Facebook, so you can do the same with your Facebook posts, there used to be a couple of apps that did it in the past. The other good thing about this is you can play around with the timings (more so w/ Facebook) and see which is the best time to get an engagement from your fans, since your able to track it from the built in analytics. Takes a bit of time to get it right, but once you are in the rhythm it become part of the routine. ![]() Anyone using opera? Have you tried some of its extensions? 27th November 2012 7:39 PM Seems that there is a Google Chrome version, I have installed it and will have a play with it. Anyone using opera? Have you tried some of its extensions? 24th November 2012 10:14 AM I haven't used Opera for a long time, I am an avid chrome user, they seem to have a very good ecosystem for add ins, I wonder if the one you mention is cross platform and also available for Chrome, I will have a look ![]() Windows 8 our first impressions - (Now upgrade to Windows 10) 14th November 2012 11:52 AM The start screen is aimed at the tablet user, but once you get beyond that and onto the desktop, its very similar to Windows 7. To be honest if you saw the desktop with out knowing it you'd think it was windows 7. There is a third party app to change the start menu back to the normal windows 7 one, called start 8. Windows 8 our first impressions - (Now upgrade to Windows 10) 10th November 2012 2:34 PM We have upgraded 5 test machines here, not had any driver problems, and only 1 PC had any issues with applications. When you download the upgrade you get the windows upgrade adviser that will scan for any compatibility issues so you'll get a heads up. No crashing on any of the machines, no blue screen, seems a little quicker if anything. The new start bar takes a bit of getting used to, but once you start to customise it a little, it becomes a great starting point, although less so for a non tablet. A couple of nice features that have made our lives easier: We have dual screen monitors and love the ability to span the desktop background and the task bar across the screens. Especially to have the object on either screen one or two dock to the relevant task bar, very useful. The new Remote Desktop connection App for the "Metro interface" allows multiple connections and the ability to easily cycle through them, its made managing servers from them much easier. Also the built in support for ISO mounting, again very useful and seamless, no mounting ISOs to a drive then navigating to the drive, just simply double click on the ISO and they automount and you advance a screen and enter in the root folder of the ISO. Much quicker. Somewhat useful, but very cool.. the new GUI for copying files, it gives a graph of the copy process and seems to be more accurate in its calculations. At least it doesn't seem to mention days or weeks anymore!! Also the transfer speeds seem a tiny bit faster, and more stable. Also worth noticing the payment / download and upgrade process was very smooth, I was expecting it to be harder. We got the copies for 24.99 (downloadable upgrade only - 2.2Gb) Another thing we noticed is that there does seem to be significant speed benefits of making a clean install, which even with the upgrade license is possible, you are given the option to create a bootable USB / CD DVD. Even against installing it as an upgrade from a fairly recent windows 7 install, the clean install seemed much more responsive. And believe me when I say, I have installed windows 1000s of times in every way known to man Overall our experience has been a good one, these have been our easiest purchase and upgrades of any OS (including Apple!) I wonder though if we were just lucky as this is not very Microsoft like!!!! But so far so good, and credit where credit is due, MS appear to have done a fairly good job. No sound or volume icon from mini laptop please help? 22nd October 2012 10:25 PM Hi Steve, This does sound like a driver issue to me, when you visited the HP site for the laptop, did you grab the driver for the x86 version of Windows XP? It could be that you download the wrong one. If you're really stuck we can arrange a remote session to jump on the machine and take a look. ![]() |
