Should the UK keep steel plants? 11th April 2016 3:23 PM

Well what an interesting development, the brand British Steel is to be reborn

Tata Steel has sold its Long Products Europe business, including its Scunthorpe plant, to investment firm Greybull Capital for a token £1 or €1.

The move will safeguard 4,400 UK jobs, but workers are being asked to accept a pay cut and less generous pension arrangements.

Greybull said it was arranging a £400m investment package as part of the deal.

The business will be rebranded as "British Steel" once the deal is completed in eight weeks, it said.

The new business would include the Scunthorpe works, two mills in Teesside, an engineering workshop in Workington, a design consultancy in York, a mill in Hayange, France, and sales and distribution facilities.

Sounds like it could be win win if they can make it work. Sounds like some pain a head as they need to streamline the business to make it viable, but better a reduced steel industry than none at all.

How can I help 11th April 2016 2:22 PM

Only real requirements here are a sense of humour  Too many forums and business boards are clicky, stuffy or full of self qualified experts!

All this palava just to show off some figurines ay lol

Many a time I have said exactly the same thing  Normally when it's a customer moaning or we've upset someone.

Sigh. Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should. Personally I don't pay cash in hand to avoid VAT and never will I. But I realise morals are pretty outdated and people are in it for themselves mostly.”

I don't know, looking around the modern world and us Brits don't seem to bad morals wise. Human nature is to look out for yourself and your family, but there are plenty of examples of people being more society minded in this country.

Look at things like your local Air Ambulance, who funds that? The average person in the street, voluntarily. Look at the growth of charities and social enterprises, then look at things like Comic Relief, Sport Relief and Children in Need and the sheer volume of money they raise from us ordinary folk.

The doom and gloom news will tell us otherwise, but we're not a bad lot really.  I'd sooner be taking the mickey out of bumbling Boris and posh Cameron than worrying about Trump becoming our leader or some corrupt <insert country> dictator.

Accepting credit cards 11th April 2016 1:54 PM

Hi Andy

This is just my humble opinion, but I'd say steer clear!

For me to put my payment card details into a website, it has give the impression of confidence and security, such as I get if I buy something from Amazon, or I use a site with a 3rd party system such as Worldpay, or even Paypal.

Off the shelf platforms and eccommerce systems tend to be the least secure by the very nature they are used by so many sites. This makes them the target of hackers and script kiddies, as exploiting any vulnerability becomes profitable and is worth the investment in time to find them.

I always think the worst, and using that principle what would happen if our site was compromised. ie impact to customer, our reputation, partner confidence etc. How happy would you be, to know your card details have been grabbed off our site regardless of separate CCV numbers.

The only private information we ever allow members to input is an email address. From a confidence point of view, our sign up pages have long been https even though there was no requirement, but it's a good visual reinforcement (we've since moved to site wide https).

Let someone else have the pain and worry of accepting  credit card details and processing the payment.

If you do decide to host card details or allow them to be in-putted on your site, then make sure your website security really is ready and your PCI DSS Compliance is valid and up to date. Non compliance will make you liable for any fraudulent transactions, including costs of forensic investigators if the issue is traced to your site.

Assuming you are already PCI DSS compliant, but for anyone reading this, you can learn more here: What is PCI DSS?

Sorry I'll be busy having a baby...possibly anyway. Haha

So you've got hospital parking to look forward to

Is viewed number correct? 11th April 2016 12:52 PM

Hi Ahamad

The page view counter is exactly as it says, and is just a simple page view counter. It blocks out spider visits (or most of the ones we know about), but other than that it is what it is. If you F5 or refresh the page, then you would see it grow by a page view.

Your intro thread "Reach120Years Diet" has to be a forum record, as it is currently showing 12,567 views, and has been one of the most viewed threads in a long time. Obviously it has generated a lot of interest!

I'll be honest it does seem very high for a welcome thread, but it is a contentious issue, so maybe that's the reason. I'll get out developer to check to make sure there isn't an outside script, scraper or bot stuck on the page, but looking at other threads, page counter seems to be working as normal.

Compared with a post Higgers did last week in General Business Discussion about John Lewis which has has 123 page views

Our best one that I'm aware of is our Tax Office thread which currently has 159,644 views, although that has been around for a while.

Will check and get back to you.

Channel 4 money grabbers 11th April 2016 12:15 PM

Now that's a rant if I ever heard one

Not a Grand national person, so assume it's moved recently to Ch4?

I know Clive is always moaning about F1 and how it seems to get harder and harder to watch it.

StumbleUpon - traffic generator? 11th April 2016 12:13 PM

lol made me chuckle Ave. No right or wrongs here mate, knock yourself out

StumbleUpon has been around for a while, had a little dabble and did add it to the social media bar that shows up in your post, but no one seemed to click it, at least forum or directory wise.

But a lot of people swear by it, so maybe it works better for niche or novelty type things. If it's generating traffic and promotion, what's not to like.

Be interesting to see how your getting on 3,6 months down the line and how it's worked out for you.

Any more nuggets like that, then fire away!

pretty much sums up me and passwords

Now they say you should use a different password for every site that requires one, and secure encrypted online password vault to remember the passwords. Trouble is what happens if you forget that password

Thought fingerprint log in's would be the answer to my prayers, but has never worked properly on my laptop, and I've reset it about 10 times on my iphone and have now given up and have use the pass code

Must have the wrong shape fingers... maybe a retina scan? Prob got the wrong shape eyeballs..

On a serious note I find all sides of the argument a bit hypocritical.... ”

Completely agree, it is funny hearing the out cry from the person in the street, or the Jeremy Kyle show candidate the BBC invariably ends up interviewing to make a point about horrible rich people. Yet most people turn a blind eye to cash in hand without declaring it, or beating up traders to knock of the VAT for cash (obviously never done that ).

I'll do anything I can do to pay less tax, so your right, is it any different for the wealthy?

Where there is a difference is a sense of right and wrong. I happily gave up child tax allowance when we could have claimed it, which seemed wrong to me, and I am a big believer in the country living within it's means.

But business wise, the government gets more than their £ of flesh from us. So I'm happy to listen to my accountant and be as tax efficient as possible. If I was worth millions, then Virgin Islands bank account here I come
