Great story if you haven't seen it.

Google got caught red handed doing paid links for its Chrome Browser download page, breaking its own T&C's, so demoted it's PageRank to 0 for 60 days

Matt Cutts (Googles SEO Public face) said that after the penalty period, Chrome's download page could be returned to its search good graces. "Someone on the Chrome side can submit a reconsideration request documenting their cleanup just like any other company would," Cutts said.

Guess that answers the question, who polices the police, it's the police

That's just bizarre. How could that even happen?

Also, 60 days doesn't sound very long. If it was another site busted just wondering how long the 0 page rank would be imposed for?

I don't think Chrome needs a lot ranking because millions of people are
already using it and it is expected to grow exponentially.

Ridiculous story, 60 days ! If it was another company god knows how the overlords at Google would of punished them !

Seems like a case of teacher giving the star pupil a tiny slap on the wrist whilst the rest of the class gets caned.

Absolutely brilliant! To be fair they could easily get the chrome download page back up there, they own the search engine! I actually think is quite fair they are not fighting the penalty, (not that it would matter much).

Imagine being an SEO company and landing Google as your customer! That must be like selling ice to the Eskimos or cheese to Simon Cowell...

Ha,

I don't think this is an isolated case either, If memory serves me then they have hit themselves previously - i'll try and dig the story out.

But good to see they make it known to the public. Perhaps its more of a PR move to re-enforce their stance?

I doubt though that other companies hit with similar penalties would be returned to their original good graces if (presumably) some of their most valuable links where stripped. Surely if these links are stripped, it would be lower down the pecking order than it once was?

Apparently Google has become a giant bureaucracy where the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing!
