Music License Scare Mongering?

I was in the office with a client at the weekend and he suddenly got a call from a group insisting that his Hi Fi shop needed a music license to play to the public.

He told the woman on the phone that they don't play music to the public and that the only place a member of the public can hear music is in a private music room and that they bring their own CDs, vinyls and DVDs in with them.

Some arguing ensues...

Then he expresses his annoyance by saying "The last owner never had to pay for this kind of nonsense and he was in business for 40 years!"

Then she tells him that he has to pay 'back payments' for the last 40 years as well!

He burst out laughing and put the phone down.

Although we are a little concerned that there might be some legal requirement on his part. But it was clear that this woman was just scare mongering rather than just being helpful. She wanted something stupid like

We ran a thread on this sometime ago:
Many Business Owners are unaware, they need a license for playing music

I think it's a joke, with parasites sorry people preying on businesses and scaremongering as you say with threats to pay up.

Personally I put having a license for the radio (which we obviously haven't got) in the same category as PAT testing for the kettle

I had a call from one of these, asked them where they got my number from and they hung up. Wish someone actually cracked down on cowboy businesses

Definitely sounds like "scare mongering" or a con artist.

I wonder if freelancescribbler ever came right and made a decision?

reading this thread I started to wonder about music being played on home made youtube videos, is a licence need here too

dothebusiness

I am not sure about that. But I have come across a few videos that have had their sound taken away because they don't own the music. But not all. I can still find fan made music videos and just a song with an album pic at YouTube.

PRS and PPL are entirely legitimate organisations that enforce licensing playing music in the non domestic environment. If videos are being played VPL can also involved.

Learn the rules to stay legal and field the enquiries correctly.

When you get these phone calls always ask the officious jobsworths to put their demands/requests in writing and say that you will respond in due course.

Never panic and always question everything. Do your research and see where you stand in law. Play the system to your advantage.

So if I'm sitting in the back of a taxi and the driver is listening to the radio and I can hear it, is he/she suppose to have a license?

Thanks,
Barney
