Why do many professional business people opt to use a cheap sitebuilder website?

.....But now explain that to a seasoned builder or accountant who probably gets a lions share of their work as word of mouth, and you will struggle to sell the professional online concept....

Agreed. A lot of these industries are doing fine by word of mouth so whilst they could increase there customer base it's easier to go with what's familiar to them. It doesn't mean it's the correct approach though!

Yes - agree about the email addresses too!

I've seen many friends use the "have a go" site builder website and it's fine just for putting a contact page up, but that's about it; websites like these won't bring you any business.

The main thing that I think that many struggle with is how to market themselves online and how to layout a good looking professional website with great content which is what a professional desinger and marketer can help you with.

Many I know realise that they need to do more with their websites but sadly, never get round to it. I like to use the example that people don't use yellow pages anymore to look up businesses; they use Google!

Have use google for sitebuilder but still prefer upload a WordPress or a Joomla site.
Just like having complete control over modules, caching, SEO and the like.
Personally I think it is worth the (minimal) effort.

Uploading WordPress or Joomla is pretty easy for most hosts. In fact many will install it directly from their control panel.

Yes, it is just the click of a button, although that's a basic install of course.

If someone then doesn't know the first place to start when it comes to adding plugins, installing themes, editing code, or even just learning how to create a page and a post, upload a picture, add a link, etc, then they're stuffed and anyway a default theme is no good for any business.

I have to agree that anyone opting to use a hotmail or gmail address for a business site is making a mistake. It just lacks professionalism.

And on the subject of scrimping on web site design, business owners really do not need to spend much money these days to have a sophisticated looking website that projects their company image in the right way.

A Wordpress website with a decent theme and some thought behind the content and any business can have a professional site with little outlay.

With the options available, there is no real excuse for a business having a sub standard online presence.

I am always suspicious of people using a hotmail or similar email address who are providing a service, it immediately makes me think "cowboy"!

Having a well designed website with the ability to update the content on a regular basis will pay dividends over time. There are plenty of designers out there who will provide an excellent designed website with branding at a reasonable cost.

People who provide services and having Hotmail and Gmail address either they are spammer or 3rd party agent who help to sale the service and want to paid commission.
