I have just run an seo tool called copyscape and found out someone has stolen content from my website. What can I do?
Thanks Harry

I'm sure someone will be along soon to tell you the procedures to follow for stopping another site from using your content.

If it were me, though, I'd first want to decide whether the business harm done by the "scraping" is significant enough to go to the bother of stopping it.

The search engines "know" where content was first authored so in theory the "scraper" won't improve his site's position by "scraping".

Hi Harry, I feel your pain

First place to start is to contact the site, and ask them to remove the content, and give them 7 days to respond.

After that it gets more involved, you can request a takedown request with their ISP, but what I find works well is a good old name and shame.

Contact them, if they are unresponsive or uncooperative, then name them in this thread and that will no doubt get a reaction

A couple of previous successes...

I would give them 3 days and say you will contact their hosting provider for a take down if they ignore/refuse. Always works for me. People who scrape content don't deserve for the polite approach so no respect is deserved if they took the first step in showing you none.

Thanks for everyones responses. I've just sent this email-

It has come to my attention that you have stolen content on your main carpet cleaning webpage. The content has been taken from my home page - Carpet cleaning Colchester | Domestic deals available..
This could compromise my own rankings and I would appreciate it if you would take it down.
Failure to do so in seven days will result in me contacting your service provider for a take down.

Thank you
Harry Robins

We shall wait and see.

P.S Could someone please run my url Carpet cleaning Colchester | Domestic deals available. through copyscape and tell me what you think- always good to have a second opinion.

Thanks Harry

No argument Harry, lazy content scrapers.

The comparison below was created by Copyscape, which searched for copies of this page:

Carpet cleaning Colchester | Domestic deals available.

The page below has 155 words matching 42% of the page, as highlighted below:

Dear Mr Robbins,

I am writing to you with regard to your message regarding text which you claim to have been "stolen" from your website.

It is true to say that I was "inspired" by your wording when writing the text for Vision Cleaning but (tried to) took/take care to alter it so it was (and is) not a direct copy. I will have another look at it and modify where appropriate in order to differentiate it more and hope this is satisfactory.

You may also want to have a word with these people as they appear to have "stolen" an image from your website... LT-dog-smell-carpet-01 | Care For Rugs, Mats and All Your Soft Floor Coverings Underfoot (dog on carpet)

Just received the above email. Hopefully it will now get sorted.

That "stolen" image looks like a library stock (istock, shutterstock, etc).

Tell him he's bound to see the same images replicated on websites now and again.

Obviously he's not that web savvy or he'd know that and was just trying to redeem his bad behaviour by grassing someone else up.

Can't find the button to thank your collective posts.
So Thanks.

I have two things to say:

1. Thank you I will be using that software myself

2. Contact them and request that they remove your content from their website.
