Apparently the UK has the largest Self Storage Industry in Europe!

Self-storage: The men who got rich selling empty space - BBC

It's amazing that the majority of us store most of our clutter, junk and rubbish in the garage, and leave our most expensive possession after the house, out on the drive in all weather.

Now it seems a lot of us need even more space, hence the explosion in self storage. "Experts say we have six times more "stuff" than the previous generation"

I think we all just need a good clear out. Box it up, put it in the garage, if you haven't looked at it for 6 months, take it down the charity shop

Now just need to convince the wife...

Yeah good thinking. People tend to keep all the staff, with no good reason. They dont't use it and at the same time someone need it very much. Half-year strategy of giving unused stuff seems good.

Thanks,

I have been in the household removals and storage business for almost 30 years.

We have been amazed at the amount of clutter that some customers carry around with them.

As well as doing local moves in West Sussex, We have moved many people to/from UK/ Europe.

In some cases they could reduce the cost of the removals if they where to get rid of a lot of junk prior to moving the money saved on the removal cost would in some cases pay for brand new effects on arrival at the new address

We have also stored effects for customers at our store in Angmering West Sussex for several years, only to be asked to dispose of it,

My advice would be if you have had something stored in your loft/garage for a year or more get rid of it as you are not going to use it. having said this I think will have to take my own advice my garage is full of junk.

lol it's re-assuring that you're garage is the same as the rest of us!

Mind you found a new method now, just leave it at the end of the drive  Used to get a scrap man round fortnightly who would only take metal. Now we seem to have battle of the tinkers and they take just about everything. Old Sofa cushions, bits of aluminium, rubbish.

Everything else now goes to the charity shop once we've achieved full sign off from the missus

Our business recently moved from a building of 6000 sq ft. We had been there since 1972, so you can imagine how much junk had been acquired over the years. With a great deal of help from my brother-in-law, we had to be totally ruthless, and make sure that the building was empty for when the property developers moved in. Although stressful, the experience was therapeutic.

Now, we need to work on the house. Just need to convince the hubby
