Fed up with HP laptops, anyone tried a Lenovo?

Historically, over the last 10 years we've always used HP laptops in the office. For us they have been a combination of quality, reliability, performance and price. Until about 3 years ago, from when we have been plagued with problems, poor quality, failing batteries, laptops dying after 2 years. To the point we've had enough and no more HP!

So I've just ordered a Lenovo Flex2 15 inch for a new starter which should turn up next week, so I'm hoping that goes down well (other than having Windows 8  ).

I now need to order another lappie as Clive's HP is currently on life-support! Many moons ago I used to use IBM Thinkpads before they were sold off to Lenovo. I always liked them, but they were a bit pricey.

Lenovo prices seem to be more reasonable, I just wonder if they have maintained the old IBM build quality and reliability?

Does anyone use any Lenovo products or have any experience with them? Any problems, issues, feedback?

Hi Steve,

Ive provided and used a lot of Lenovo Laptop/Tablets over the last couple of years and for the price I find them great quality.  I do not see many come through for hardware issues, in fact I think only one, which was a disk drive issue, but it was possibly due to a fall rather than failure. Ive noticed more stability in Windows 8 since the 8.1 update. Id have no quarms about recommending them as an option for anyone, certainly more than the more recent efforts by HP/Compaq

Hope that is of use

Kind Regards

Nick

Thanks Nick, your insight is very much appreciated

The Flex 2 arrived today and seems alright (other than Windows 8.1). But a quick download of Classic Shell puts the start button back where it belongs and makes people more productive!

Certainly impressed with first impressions.

My HP is just hanging on - its not 3 years old yet and its my 2nd HP that died prematurely.

With the promise of a new lappy on its way, be interesting to see how quickly i can break it - i do seem to have a gift in this department

Clive

never even heard of lenovo?

Thanks,
Johno

Nope nor me, but i am assured that its a decent machine.

I believe that they used to be IBM machines but they sold off this part of the business some years back.

Anyway its too late - my new lenovo machine is on its way, with Windows 8, so no doubt it will take me the next 3 years to get used to it - will report back once its here and set up !

The panelled start screen is by far the biggest annoyance in Windows 8 that people love to complain about...  it does seem a little pointless outside of touchscreen machines, but if you have a perfectly good keyboard and mouse, why would you ever use touchscreen on a Laptop (i had the first ever dell one 4 years ago, and i never used the touch really).  Ive noticed that classic shell bombs out on some machines with no particular reason.  If that happens  IOBIT do an alternative if you can find by searching 'IOBIT start menu'.

Good luck with the new lappy, hope it performs well

It seems HP have become of increasingly poor quality over the last few years.  Their motherboards seem to burn out within 6 - 18 mths.  I know of a lot of people who have had a real headache getting HP to replace under warranty.  I generally warn people off them now, which is a shame as they used to knock out some of the best equipment out there.

Good tip about IOBIT. Only previously had 1 windows 8 machine, and classic shell hasn't caused any probs to date, but certainly makes life easier

Just ordered Clive (Garde) a ThinkPad L540 with extra RAM which should do the job as a no thrills work horse.

Hopefully my Pavilion dv7 will last another 12 months, or at least until the next version of windows comes out, which I hear has the start button back! After much consumer grumbling

Plus will give me a chance to see how the new Lenovo's perform, otherwise I'll end up joining the church of mac and buying a pair of sandals

Still solid IMO, one I have with work but also one at home, though still on Windows 7 for both....    ...phew!
