Interesting stuff from the beeb. Internet access is low generally across Africa, but mobile usage is going through the roof "there are currently 695 million mobile phone subscribers in Africa"

So to successfully tap into this market, you have to adopt a different approach.

"Primedia Online supplies tailored news content in portals across the southern continent, in addition to providing technology and ad business to local publishers wanting to tap into the mobile market.

Primedia business development manager Susan Hansford explains that advertising on mobile phones is more competitive now amongst companies.

"E-commerce shouldn't be in desktop form for Africa, I think the focused efforts on the mobile side of e-commerce will change the way business is done in this continent," she says

I am looking forward to 4G mobile coverage in the UK

Great for customers and for making money out of it.

How many years will I have to wait?

Hi

It is interesting but Mobile Commerce is booming everywhere! All of the publications I subscribe to are all talking mobile, mobile, mobile, but the difference is that now, compared to the last few years, people are actually starting to spend and growth is showing no signs of slowing down. It's become much more than a just talking point.

Very interesting reading though...

Hi

It is interesting but Mobile Commerce is booming everywhere!

Did you see the stats released from Google ref Olympic searches?

"European countries showed especially high mobile search volume with most countries having one-third or more of their Olympics-related searches occurring on a tablet or smartphone. In some European countries this number was substantially higher - in the UK, 46% of Olympics searches happened on mobile. In Asia, South Korea (36%) and Australia (45%) saw mobile search volume spikes, while Japan (55%) was at the front of the pack."

Now they put this some of this down to multi screen surfing, ie watching your TV while getting more info from your smart phone or tablet, but still interesting stuff.

The mobile market is definitely in full growth, so if you are reliant on web traffic, then it's wakeup time if your site isn't mobile friendly!

I live in Africa and transact alot of e-business. Mobile phones are relatively affordable and thats why a good majority are able to use them for business. As for desktops and internet majority tend to shy away because of prohibiting cost. It up to thier governments to reduce taxes on computers and reduce internet rates.
