Travel Tuesday. 11th November 2016 1:53 PM

I've seen something like this on the Business Traveller forum site and seems like a good idea.  Don't think we'll see it in the UK any time soon as decisions on things like runways take forever! Maybe the Chinese will be the first to introduce it; have you seen there airports around Chinese new year.......

Those paper tags are surprisingly strong and have now replaced the need for an additional tag as your name is printed on it.  However if travelling with friends/family you often find first surname alphabetically dictates the name on the other tags.  Computerised baggage handling "behind the scenes" is now the norm, but like anything with human input mistakes happen.

With the development of apps someone may be working on one that scans your part of the tag that's attached to the boarding card, which you can then use to track where you bag is, s oyou don't need the expensive suitcase.  An interim solution perhaps?

Thought this would be your topic this week Jan.

Did page turn orange as coffee ran down.........

Festive Gift Fair, NEC Birmingham 11th November 2016 12:49 PM

Went there yesterday, on its first day (finishes Sunday).  I've had a love/hate relationship with this event, returning last year after giving it a miss.  Lucky to get a cut-price ticket from a lady who had a spare.

One thing I noticed was the larger number of traders who were taking cash only; were they in league with the NEC who had installed a large number of ATMs charging £2.50 per transaction.  Lots of traders selling cheese and fudge!

Now for the real moans.  In addition to the ATM charge and cash only trend, there's not enough seating unless you go out of the show; then you have your hand stamped so you can get back in.  With the "olds" in tow, sitting down frequently is important. Went on train as parking now £12.  None of staff seemed to know how often station shuttle bus ran, we waited around 20 minutes.

I'll keep comments about other visitors to myself, but why do people stare.......

Chocolate bars aren't like they used to be 11th November 2016 12:30 PM

Agree that the "bites" bags are only worth £1.  Bought Twirl ones a few weeks ago because Asda had put Twirl multipack of four back to £1.99 (100%) mark-up.  Guess what, multipack now back to £1 and same price in local Co-op.

Looking forward to visiting Lindt shop at Resorts World (NEC Birmingham) soon.  Think their 10% discount is for November only.   Noticed Thorntons have expanded their range; still love their Continental.

The One Show 11th November 2016 12:22 PM

Don't usually watch this but did last night as was at my aunt's house and she is a Cliff Richard fan.  Putting aside what he has recently experienced, the show and his interview were cringe-worthy.   If he's got such a good relationship with the BBC, why is he suing them???

Then I sat through EastEnders........

Nail Polish Direct is a supplier of nail polishes/lacquers in individual bottles and boxed collections,  for well-known makes including OPI.  They have an easily navigated website and free UK delivery.  Postman brought my latest purchase this morning; I placed order Monday evening when they notified me the item was back in stock.  Great saving on RRP and £6 cheaper than Amazon.

Found them after reading Amazon reviews that some of their customers had been sent used product.

Now he has passed away, how long before something surfaces from the gutter. "He touched my bum 40 years ago.." If Sir Cliff isn't safe....

Interesting question asked in, I think, The Telegraph yesterday.  Before the Met Commissioner retires, why does he not prosecute the fantasists who have made these allegations......

How to market a niche service 9th November 2016 12:30 PM
Interesting that driving is seen as a H&S issue

Apparently business travel is now covered by the Health & Safety At Work Act 1974 and the Management of Health & Safety At Work Regulations 1999 require employers to ensure employees receive adequate safety training.  This includes method of travel and customs of country to be visited.

To simplify a rather long article written by a legal bod, if an employee falls foul of local laws (example given of drinking alcohol or homosexuality in Middle East), then the employer can be prosecuted if the employee can prove they did not receive adequate training before their trip.

I know Edinburgh doesn't fall into this category......

M&S morphing into a supermarket? 9th November 2016 12:00 PM

It's interesting that they haven't yet confirmed which UK stores will close or be turned over to food only.  They've only declared their hand with the overseas stores.  Will be surprised if my local town centre one survives as there's a massive out-of-town one about 8 miles away where parking is free. There's also a local food only store next to a Tesco Extra and another almost completed as part of an area regeneration. M&S made big mistake in trying to cater to younger generation who hardly ever buy clothes there.  My mother (81) and I often refer to the Classic range as "old ladies' department".  What's left in between, very little now that they've resorted to cheap overseas manufacture and out of touch designers.  Understand that menswear is also suffering from poor quality.  The High Street will look bare as no-one has yet had the imagination to give us what we want, only what they think we want.

Not sure if they want to take on Aldi and Lidl.  In my personal experience, Aldi and Lidl have good quality fruit and veg, but I'm still not confident enough with the other products to switch.  I've always viewed M&S and Waitrose as the luxury end of the food market; at least M&S has now started to offer reductions and price matches.

Back to M&S versus Waitrose.  With the recent announcement that BA would be selling M&S sandwiches on their short-haul flights, the view is that they have teamed with another failing brand.  Apparently Waitrose passed on this "opportunity".

Thats it then! 9th November 2016 11:21 AM

With the Republicans now also having a majority in the Senate and House of Representatives he's going to have an easier time than Obama.  If unsuccessful, then he'll go to war somewhere in the world to try and hide his failings.  Maybe his first overseas trip will be to Germany to see the walls that have been built by some villages, to segregate the immigrants.

As with the result, perhaps he will surprise/shock us all and do something about that hair......

Felt sorry for his young son, looked like he wanted to be anywhere but on stage with his father.  Wonder what The Last Leg will make of it all.  US election special 10pm tonight Channel 4.
