Goodbye BHS 1st August 2016 11:47 AM

Personally, the only things I found good about BHS were their lighting, swimwear and towels.  Clothes were not good quality.  They were even considering reopening food outlets in some towns; something they did unsuccessfully a few years ago.

Some of today's newspapers are carrying stories about Philip Green's attitude towards employees.   Not a surprise given his behaviour towards Frank Field.  I don't think removing his knighthood would make much difference; he needs to be hit where it hurts, really hurts.  Perhaps he would like to share a cell with Mr Chapple (or however you spell/pronounce it).

I think it's a great idea to get kids and adults moving around, especially as it's now school holidays where I live.

Having spent time recently with my 11-year-old niece in grounds of church opposite her house, I still can't see the attraction but she doesn't have much patience when explaining these things, but I got the general idea. Thankfully, we only had to wait 30 minutes before "capturing" two Pokemon.  Not many other people about.  When I asked her what she did about it during the night, she replied "Daddy says that's taking it too far".

What Are You Listening To Now? 1st August 2016 11:30 AM

Aircraft on climb out of Birmingham Airport! Wind currently in wrong direction to see Emirates A380 today.

Earlier had passing goods train and American Airlines 757 climbing en route to New York competing in noise level stakes.  It was close but aircraft won!

My broken landline 1st August 2016 11:27 AM

I know lots of people who wouldn't touch them, but I've recently had to contact TalkTalk.  They provide my landline and broadband.

Engineer at green box across road last Monday afternoon.  Landline rang Monday evening and I thought it was a nuisance call, but could hear dialling in background.  After that, couldn't get dialling tone.  Finally reported it on Wednesday via their website; they diverted landline to mobile.  Another engineer at green box on Wednesday afternoon, advised test would take 24-48 hours.  Finally resolved lunchtime Friday.

It took a while, but everything fine now.  All the staff I dealt with, including Friday's Openreach engineer, were fine, but I'm still wondering why it took three of them to put it right!

Survival of the Fittest..... 1st August 2016 11:20 AM

I've heard anything between 6 and 10 feet, not just in London.

Got rid of them last year with help from local council.   Ex-neighbour couldn't be bothered to put bin bags out, just left them on patio.  Few letters and visits from council did the trick!

Wow Steve, that is amazing!!  Wonder how many times between order and till points they will be asked "can I help you?"

Not being a coffee drinker I don't go in there, except when I've been in airport with travelling companions.  Airport ones do seem better organised, but I suppose they are aware of possible time constraints.

Costa's blueberry muffins are very nice......

Noisy Neighbours 1st August 2016 10:50 AM

Sounds like a variation on topic about my neighbours.

Just dozing off the other night when he starts van, reverses down communal drive, sits with headlights on, having a ciggie, then drives back up and parks.  My 85-year-old neighbour has taken issue with him over his parking. Also witnessed row with his girlfriend last week, containing very "choice" language and what sounded like breaking crockery.  Thanks for disturbing my quiet evening sitting in my garden!

Add to this young couple next door with two young children.  The elder child only seems able to communicate by screaming, even at times when she should be in bed.  Have registered my displeasure by closing back door firmly on occasions!

Spelling out why grammar matters 1st August 2016 10:28 AM

Very interesting discussion here! English is a difficult language when you have so many words that sound the same but are spelt differently.

The one that really irritates me is the use of them.  For example "I like them shoes".  This should be "I like those shoes".  Them is used when you are responding to a question such as "Do you like those shoes"; answer is "Yes, I like them".  I think we can blame a well-known soap for that one!

During a recent episode of The Job Interview, an interviewer pointed out four mistakes in a candidate's CV.  This involved not using an initial capital letter for the different elements of Microsoft Office.  As the role had a large admin content, the candidate didn't get the job.

I'm not the only saddo on the forum

Was at RIAT at the weekend, what do you think?

F35 Stealth Fighter

Steve, very impressive but I'm more of a civils girl than military.  Stood end of RAF Waddington runway many years ago to witness "Sparrows" display.  I would have probably been better off at Farnborough, although with eyes watering at the amount of money that Virgin Atlantic is spending on the A350!

Have withdrawal symptoms for Emirates A380 at the moment, as it's landing into Birmingham from the south.  Should see it from Sunday onwards for a few days when wind changes direction.
