Must admit, never really been a fan of press releases. Tried a couple in the early days, and other than a bit of local paper coverage, never saw any worthwhile results online, but maybe I'm being unfair, and this was before the days of twitter and facebook.

I suppose they are glorified articles/link bait, but the trick is to get them noticed in the sea of press releases.

Here's a useful Press Release checklist from seo.site-reference.com

Interesting point about the title - "Is the title 120 characters or less, including spaces? (Short enough for Twitter and most other Social Media sites.)"

Something else to bear in mind with any article titles, blogs, PR's etc, is that you should always allow for user name and RT's in the character allocation, always surprises me this is never mentioned!

RT @mylocalforums - On and Offline Sales, Marketing and PR - <<Good stuff MLF!

People like to add things, usernames to cc friends in, RT, Retweeted users name etc, I would stick below the 120 to be honest!

Must try to think of an interesting subject to do a press release for.

When you do, its Ellipsis Copy - Copywriting and PR - Bath Mark, real copywriter, awesome, not just someone "good" at English. Jo comes from BBC and Guardian stock, and is an absolute gem.

Thanks for info, will think of a good topic.

People are interested in the news and are always looking for a good story. Business owners can use press releases to give them those good stories while making a name for their company. The best way to do that is to make sure the release is a story and not simply an advertisement for your business.

You have to have any interesting news or announcement to write Press Releases, the main aim to post press releases is to announce changes, launching of any new products or services, discounts on services/products etc.

Press releases is a good way to get initial attention on something that's just starting up and can work well for something relatively new because press releases will give it that little spark needed for the subject to be a little eagerly anticipated before it gets released.

Good way to lure in potential customers

Press Release works well for startups or any new product launch. Well written press release gives huge success before released.

True, but this is a checklist of things to do when creating press releases. Do you use them, and do you have any tips for us? Most of us don't use them because its either time consuming, or just not getting the traffic it deserves, so any information would be great

Thanks,
Dreamraven

As Dreamraven says, can you offer some insights to Press releases or examples you have done? Certainly not something I'm particularly any good at, so be interesting to see some of yours if they worked well for you.
